About The Position

The Kendall Laboratory within the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a Laboratory Specialist to work on projects investigating host-microbe-pathogen interactions. Under the supervision of Dr. Kendall, the incumbent will participate in laboratory projects involving a combination of microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, microscopy and small animals (mice) techniques. Research activity conducted includes, but is not limited to, general microbiology, molecular biology and biochemical techniques (cloning and sequence analysis, immuno-precipitation, RNA purification and western-blot), cell culture using immortalized and primary cell lines, and small animal (mice) handling.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required, may accept combination of experience/education/certification in lieu of degree.
  • 1+ year of relevant lab experience required.
  • Proficiency in anaerobic microbiology and culturing techniques.
  • Proficiency in molecular biology techniques.
  • Strong work ethic with a high level of self-motivation and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
  • Eagerness to acquire new skills.
  • Accuracy and attention to details.
  • Work concurrently on several projects and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated initiative in decision-making and problem solving.
  • Computer skills (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

Nice To Haves

  • 3 years of relevant lab experience preferred.

Responsibilities
