About The Position

The Laboratory Services Coordinator reports to the Biospecimen Shared Services Resource (BSSR) Lab Manager. This role supports all activities of the BSSR Biorepository by functioning as an integral part of a team in a multi-disciplinary lab and providing services to investigators across the OSUWMC and outside of The Ohio State University. The position involves sample processing, constructing sample libraries, receiving, preparing, and distributing specimens, and preparing nucleic acids or protein lysate. It also includes processing time-sensitive patient samples for various studies, managing sample records in a laboratory information management system, and ensuring compliance with all safety standards. The role requires using prescribed laboratory methods, instruments, and automated equipment, as well as assisting in the design and implementation of new lab procedures. Training on equipment use and maintenance, training student workers, and participating in setting goals for research projects and planning lab work are also key responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or health related sciences and/or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • 2 years of relevant experience required.
  • Good working knowledge of laboratory principles, equipment and safety standards required
  • Data collection and data entry experience required
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

Nice To Haves

  • 2-4 years of relevant experience preferred.
  • Experience processing tissue, blood, urine, and bone marrow samples, handling bio-hazardous materials and aseptic techniques preferred
  • Experience with nucleic acid isolation desired
  • Histology experience desired
  • Knowledge of tissue procurement techniques and anatomic pathology desired
  • Knowledge of medical terminology

Responsibilities

  • Supports all activities of the BSSR Biorepository by functioning as an integral part of a team in a multi-disciplinary lab and providing services to investigators across the OSUWMC and outside of The Ohio State University
  • Participates in sample processing and constructs sample libraries of many sample types including, but not limited to, blood, bone marrow, plasma, serum, paraffin embedded tissue, lymphoblastoid cell lines and DNA/RNA samples
  • Receives, prepares and distributes specimens; prepares nucleic acids or protein lysate
  • Processes specimens of time-sensitive patient samples for pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamics and other correlative studies; manages sample records in a laboratory information management system
  • Ensures compliance with all safety standards
  • Uses prescribed laboratory methods, instruments and automated equipment
  • Reviews, prioritizes and assists in the design and implementation of new lab procedures as needed
  • Trains on proper use of manual and automated equipment and maintains instrument maintenance records
  • Trains student workers; participates in setting goals for research projects and in the planning of lab work
