About The Position

The Juarez Lab at the University of Maryland-Baltimore is seeking to hire a contractual Laboratory Research Assistant. The lab investigates stress and substance-use disorders using circuit dissecting viral based CRISPR/Cas9 gene-editing and neurophysiological methods in animal models. The candidate will assist with benchmarking newly engineered fluorescent sensors using in vivo fiber photometry in rodents. Past laboratory experience and the ability to handle mice are required. The lab is dedicated to the career development of all scientists.

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
  • Knowledge of position requirements.
  • Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws.
  • Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.

Nice To Haves

  • Background knowledge or experience in stereotactic surgery
  • Background knowledge or experience in behavior
  • Background knowledge or experience in colony management
  • At least one year of experience working in a laboratory environment.
  • Knowledgeable in data entry and/or word processing and/or data analysis and using spreadsheets and statistical analysis preferred.
  • Research experience in mouse handling.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine laboratory maintenance and research activities such as: mouse colony maintenance, general housekeeping, immunohistochemisry, electrophoresis, DNA extractions, etc.
  • Perform advanced laboratory research activities such as: stereotactic surgery in mice, in vivo fiber photometry recording during behavior, microscopy techniques, imaging techniques, recombinant DNA techniques, and plasmid purification.
  • Compile and analyze research data using various relevant computer software applications.
  • Perform administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians; assisting in developing policies, procedures, and/or methods for laboratory experimentation; presentation of results to group members.
  • May participate in the design of research studies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
