About The Position

A Lab Helper will assist the Advanced BioImaging Facility (ABIF) in supporting daily operations, ensuring microscopy rooms, shared equipment and consumable supplies are maintained up to the standards required for sensitive imaging work. This position is essential to maintaining a clean, safe and functional environment for facility users and imagining scientists with the goal of ensuring an efficient use of the available resources at the university.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; post-secondary studies in science or a related field are an asset.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety practices, including the handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Experience using or willingness to learn laboratory equipment such as autoclaves and incubators.
  • Ability to safely handle and replace compressed gas cylinders following established procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining clean, organized, and contamination-controlled laboratory environments.
  • Ability to monitor inventory levels, restock supplies, and maintain accurate records.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize routine tasks.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, moving supplies and gas cylinders, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a research laboratory environment.
  • Basic computer skills for communication, record keeping, and inventory tracking.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact effectively with laboratory users and staff.
  • Previous experience working in a laboratory, research facility, healthcare setting, or technical environment.
  • Familiarity with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) regulations and procedures.
  • Experience with laboratory cleaning, sterilization processes, inventory management, or facility support services.
  • Must be authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in the province of Quebec.
  • Level #4 English proficiency (qualifier) on a scale of 0-4.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and disinfect incubators on a regular schedule
  • Operate the autoclave to sterilize labware and waste materials
  • Monitor and restock consumable supplies including pipette tips, gloves, wipes, alcohol bottles and immersion oil
  • Clean and tidy microscope rooms to maintain dust-free, contamination-controlled environment
  • Collect and dispose hazardous waste in accordance with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) guidelines
  • Dust and clean computer workstations and laser fans to prevent equipment malfunction
  • Install and replace compressed gas tanks, including removal and staging of empty tanks for pick up
