About The Position

We are a regional integrated laboratory system supporting the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. The organization includes core and specialty laboratories, rapid-response hospital laboratories, centralized STAT and blood bank laboratories, and a comprehensive outreach infrastructure. DMCUL performs more than 1,000 tests, including advanced specialty testing, and provides reference laboratory services to healthcare organizations throughout Southeast Michigan and other states. The Division of Laboratory Genetics includes Molecular Pathology, Cytogenetics, and HLA laboratories and provides testing for inherited diseases and cancer. The division supports DMC physicians, regional outreach clients, and Karmanos Cancer Institute, an NCI-Designated Cancer Center. The selected candidate will also be appointed as faculty within the Wayne State University Department of Pathology, with academic rank based on experience, and will participate in teaching residents, fellows, and students. The Lab Director – Molecular Pathology & Cytogenetics will provide technical and operational leadership for the Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics Laboratories. Working closely with the Medical Director and Administrative Director, this leader will oversee laboratory operations, testing methodologies, quality, regulatory compliance, staffing, budgets, technical development, and performance improvement.

Requirements

PhD in Life Sciences or a relevant discipline such as: Genetics, Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology, Related biological sciences
Previous experience in a clinical laboratory environment.
Administrative and/or managerial experience involving clinical laboratory technical activities.
Experience with Molecular Pathology and/or Cytogenetics laboratory operations.
Board certification or active candidacy through the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ABMGG) in one of the following: Laboratory Genetics and Genomics, Clinical Cytogenetics and Genomics, Clinical Molecular Genetics and Genomics
Experience with a range of molecular genetics and cytogenetic methodologies, including: Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), RT-PCR, Sanger Sequencing, Microarray, FISH, Karyotyping, Molecular pathology techniques, Cytogenetic testing methodologies

Responsibilities

Lead planning, organization, direction, and coordination of Molecular Genetics and Cytogenetics laboratory operations.
Oversee pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical laboratory processes.
Partner with Medical and Administrative Directors on technical, operational, financial, and quality objectives.
Establish and monitor laboratory testing methods, procedures, standards, and quality-control programs.
Ensure the validity, accuracy, reliability, and timely reporting of laboratory test results.
Evaluate and implement new technologies, methodologies, and procedures to improve quality, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.
Develop technical policies, systems, procedures, and short- and long-term laboratory plans.
Oversee staffing requirements, work schedules, training programs, and technical personnel development.
Direct technical training for employees, medical technology students, medical students, residents, and other learners.
Participate in proficiency testing and monitor laboratory performance.
Maintain technical records, reports, quality metrics, and regulatory documentation.
Collaborate with physicians, genetic counselors, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other clinical stakeholders.
Investigate testing discrepancies and communicate findings and recommendations to physicians and medical leadership.
Participate in experimental testing and evaluate new methods to improve test validity and accuracy.
Participate in operating and capital budget development and ensure laboratory operations remain within assigned budgets.
Evaluate staff performance and support employee development in collaboration with Medical and Administrative Directors.
Maintain relationships with educational institutions, professional organizations, and regulatory agencies.
Participate in committees, administrative meetings, and laboratory leadership activities.
Support teaching and education of pathology residents, fellows, students, and other healthcare professionals.
