About The Position

This position coordinates the day to day operations of the laboratory. Specific job responsibilities include assuring appropriate staffing levels, problem solving, managing patient results, verification and reporting of results, maintaining inventory and function as a liaison with nursing units and physicians. All functions coordinated under the direction of Laboratory Manager and Director of Ancillary Services; in addition will oversee the Lab Customer Service Outreach tasks.

Requirements

  • Associate’s Degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school
  • Laboratory accreditation agency certification, ASCP, CLMA, or HEW
  • Five years generalist experience in clinical laboratory; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares and makes decisions to assure adequate staffing levels.
  • Adjust staffing as needed in relation to call offs or workload variances.
  • Collaborates with Director of Ancillary Services on all policy and procedure issues.
  • In absence of the Director of Ancillary Services make decisions concerning the continued operation of the laboratory.
  • Oversee the laboratory and maintain oversight of off-site draw stations.
  • Identify and correct malfunctioning instrumentation or testing procedures.
  • If problems cannot be corrected in a timely manner, decide on alternative testing methods or testing site.
  • Review and correct any quality control problems.
  • Resolve problems by appropriate measures, i.e., troubleshoot according to policy and procedure.
  • Resolve problems for department that were unable to be corrected by other staff either by phone consultation, reporting to facility to consult, or on next scheduled shift.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision of highly complex test performance.
  • Assure that all key remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
  • Ensure that the patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken.
  • Provide orientation to the site for phlebotomists.
  • Maintain and log all off-site fire drills and evacuation plans per policy.
  • Visit, at least annually, each off-site location to ensure locations are kept up-to-date with DOH/CMS regulations as they pertain to the hospital licensure.
  • Maintain quality of operations per CAP standards.
  • Ensure privacy is maintained for patients.
  • Maintain reagent and supply inventory for laboratory department, maintain contracts with vendors and clients.
  • Places orders for needed supplies and reagents with Purchasing Department.
  • Communicates with company representative regarding procedural and/or supply problems or issues.
  • Assist with the laboratory Budget for each fiscal year.
  • Maintain current contracts with instrument vendors to ensure uninterrupted service.
  • Provide contracts or agreements as required by clients.
  • Monitor standing orders for supplies.
  • Cover open areas as needed and required due to staffing shortages.
  • Maintain basic technical skills and knowledge of laboratory sub sections daily operating processes.
  • Provide customer service and phlebotomy as needed.
  • Monitor collection sites to ensure compliance with hospital policy and regulatory guidelines.
  • Provide educational opportunities to staff and self in accordance with regulations.
  • Attend no less than two educational seminars per year outside the institution.
  • Provide no less than ten educational in-services per year to technical staff.
  • Maintain responsibility for monitoring test analysis and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytic performance are maintained.
  • Provide and maintain a safe environmental for staff, patients, and guests.
  • Manager CAP proficiency testing program to assess laboratory and individual performance.
  • Ensure departmental compliance with guidelines established by governmental and regulatory agencies.
  • Be able to recognize and actively pursue correction of safety hazards within the laboratory.
  • Review CAP proficiency pre and post examinations on a weekly basis.
  • Perform corrective action as needed.
  • Provide written response as needed if failures occur.
  • Maintain an up to date testing menu as required by CAP and CMS.
  • Measure individual technical performance by ensuring each technician performs an equal share of proficiency testing.
  • Discuss CAP and alternate proficiency testing result at the scheduled technical staff meeting.
  • Provide remedial action and learning opportunity as available and required.
  • Maintain responsibility for special patient billing and assist with problem solving for billing.
  • Perform or assist in client billing and special patient billing and assist with problem solving for billing.
  • Assist with billing department to resolve problems with patient billing.
  • Review BAR rejections in Meditech, make necessary corrections to patient account.
  • Provide lists as requested by billing of monthly clients.
  • Identify, interview and hire qualified personnel.
  • Monitor Point of Care testing, offsite clinical testing and the laboratory information system for issue and errors.
  • Perform monthly review and evaluation of Pont of Care testing processes used by the clinical departments.
  • Provide new employee and yearly education with learning assessment.
  • Maintain records as required by CAP and CMS.
  • Provide review of off site lab testing a minimum of twice yearly, and educate staff as needed.
  • Provide direction and assistance when minor issues occur.
  • Provide education or direct the education for new employees.
  • Work with the LIS coordinator to add and make changes to current testing menu and current work routines within LIS.
  • Provide regulatory requirements to LIS coordinator to ensure compliance.
  • Participate in and monitor Performance Improvement within the hospital and within the laboratory as part of CAP regulations.
  • Provide an annual summary report to the laboratory Director to include Workplace injuries Safety Violations Chemical Spills Pathology (required) PI Patient safety issues (Confidential incident reports).
  • Attend and participate in hospital Performance Improvement.
