About The Position

The Department of Chemistry and the University of Saskatchewan offer CSC accredited undergraduate programs and M.Sc. and Ph.D. graduate programs. These academic programs are coupled with faculty research programs that span all sub-disciplines of chemistry as well as emerging interdisciplinary areas. The Undergraduate Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing and assisting in the delivery of undergraduate chemistry laboratories related to the 1st year Engineering program.

Requirements

  • A BSc in Chemistry.
  • A minimum of two years of related experience which can include experience related to graduate work.
  • The ability to work independently, collaboratively and as part of a group is imperative.
  • The position requires the ability to work with confidential student information in a discreet manner.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, good written and oral communication skills and computer skills are all required.
  • Solid background in chemistry and familiarity with common laboratory techniques and instrumentation is required.

  • Experience with undergraduate chemistry courses in the Department of Chemistry, University of Saskatchewan is a major asset.

Responsibilities

  • Select, supervise, train and evaluate laboratory TAs with the quality of instruction in the chemistry laboratories given highest priority.
  • Develop professional, collaborative relationship with members of the laboratory teaching staff, with faculty and staff within the Department and with the College of Engineering
  • Develop and deliver chemistry laboratories for the Engineering program.
  • Prepare, develop and deliver teaching materials that are consistent with course objectives and are completed in a timely manner. These include lab schedules, TA manuals, marking schemes, lab manuals, quizzes, problem session questions and solutions, online homework systems, etc.
  • Ensure a safe work environment by making sure that safe chemistry lab practices are followed and that all current environmental health and safety regulations are met.
  • Ensure appropriate on-site training for TAs and students in safety procedures and practices.
  • Ensure effective use of people, materials and equipment to minimize financial expense of chemistry lab operation.
  • Provide assistance with chemistry laboratory work and online class assignments through direct student interaction and through email.
  • Assist in the professional development of TAs by providing mentorship and support for their teaching duties.
  • Provide exemplary student advising and mentoring.
  • Prepare, maintain and submit accurate attendance and grades records and likewise ensure these are submitted regularly by TAs.
  • Develop appropriate chemistry laboratory schedules for the department.
  • Help with lab registration, overrides and exemptions.
  • Act as a resource person in chemistry lab related matters. Such activities may include meeting with partners in the College of Engineering and providing chemicals and access to equipment as deemed appropriate.
