About The Position

Encompass Medical Group is a primary care provider group dedicated to the highest standards of healthcare excellence across its five offices in the Kansas City metro area. We are currently recruiting for a full-time Certified Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant for our Independence office. This role involves performing limited laboratory procedures requiring technical skills and independent judgment in urinalysis, hematology, and chemistry. We are seeking a patient-centered individual who provides excellent customer service to join our dynamic team. The hours for this position are 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. This position plays a pivotal role in coordinating activities between out-patients, outlying clinics, and laboratory personnel. Responsibilities include meeting and greeting patients, answering incoming calls, collecting, preparing, and processing all specimens for lab testing according to the lab requisition, and complying with all state and federal regulations and company policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Complete a certifiable Phlebotomy course or other approved training
  • Maintenance of an active phlebotomy certification required from a nationally recognized organization
  • Phlebotomy experience required
  • Can distinguish colors
  • Demonstrates independent judgment
  • Demonstrates good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Requires coordination and good manual dexterity skills
  • Demonstrates initiative
  • Possesses ability to work under stress
  • Demonstrates ability to organize
  • Ability to stand and/or sit for long periods of time
  • Lifting up to 40 lbs. may be required
  • Wearing of protective masks, gloves, and goggles as necessary to prevent injury or contamination

Responsibilities

  • Maintain active phlebotomy certification required from one of the following nationally-recognized organizations: NHA, NAHP, ASCP, ACA, ASPT, NPA, AMT, NCPE, NPS, NCCT
  • Serves as the main patient greeter and liaison between lab personnel and customers, both internal and external
  • Receives all incoming calls for the department and, if necessary, refers them to the appropriate laboratory personnel after collecting all pertinent patient data
  • Collects appropriate specimens for lab testing according to lab protocols and state and federal regulatory agencies
  • Verifies and identifies patient by name and date of birth
  • Properly labels all specimen containers with correct patient information
  • Directs and advises patients on techniques for the proper collection of specimens
  • Prepares and processes both in-house and clinic blood and other body fluids as required prior to transporting to external reference laboratory
  • Performs data entry of patient information and lab tests
  • Notifies patients or other clinics of any necessary redraws and notifies provider of any improperly collected samples
  • Interacts closely with other laboratory personnel to ensure smooth and efficient work flow
  • Understands the complex relationship between test(s) ordered and specimen received
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of both the Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Laboratory Information systems (Labdaq)
  • Performs other duties as directed by supervisor
