About The Position

The Lab Assistant III performs blood specimen collection, specimen receipt and distribution of laboratory specimens, and CLIA-waived laboratory tests as requested. The position processes anatomic pathology and cytology specimens and assists pathologists and histology technicians as needed. The Lab Assistant III may supervise or lead Lab Assistant I and II positions when requested, completes established competencies during the designated introductory period, and performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school graduate or equivalent.
• Three years of laboratory experience and/or completion of a formal phlebotomy training program.
• Phlebotomy certification where required by state law.

Nice To Haves

• Associate degree in a laboratory or medical field from an accredited institution.
• Basic laboratory computer or laboratory information system experience.
• Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program and/or national phlebotomy certification through ASCP, ANP, ASPT, or similar.

Responsibilities

• Perform venous and capillary phlebotomy.
• Maintain specimen integrity and follow proper labeling protocols for specimen tubes and containers.
• Process blood and other body fluids for analyses performed by BHS or reference laboratories.
• Test specimens under general supervision for clinical studies in accordance with established BHS policies and procedures.
• Report laboratory results accurately and responsively, recognizing abnormal or unexpected results, errors, and problems with patient tests.
• Input and retrieve data from the laboratory computer system.
• Perform basic clerical functions.
• Assist with stocking and maintaining laboratory supply inventory.
• Assist with writing procedures as necessary.
• Assist with training phlebotomists or laboratory students.
• Perform CLIA-waived laboratory tests as requested.
• Process anatomic pathology and cytology specimens as requested.
• Assist pathologists and histology technicians as needed.
• Supervise or lead Lab Assistant I and II positions as requested.
