About The Position

Under the direct supervision of the Pre-Analytical Supervisor or the Section Supervisor, this role is responsible for accessioning, receiving, and processing specimens, answering phones, faxing results upon request, report distribution, and phlebotomy. The position also assists in training new employees and/or students as needed, completes assignments with accuracy and in a timely manner without compromising the quality of the patient sample, and exercises good judgment in recognizing and correcting irregularities and/or unusual requests. Performs other miscellaneous duties or special projects as assigned and complies with all aspects of the job according to written procedure.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
Two (2) years of directly related work experience
Ability to establish good working relationships with a variety of professional, technical and nontechnical staff
Ability to keep blood drawing trays and equipment clean and well organized
Ability to organize, prioritize, multi-task, and adapt to changing priorities
Ability to perform blood collection procedures using skin (micro) puncture and venipuncture
Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English effectively at a level appropriate for the job
Knowledge of basic laboratory testing procedures, laboratory precautions, and use and care of laboratory equipment in assigned area
Knowledge of instruments, methods and materials used in a hospital laboratory
Knowledge of phlebotomy methods and techniques
Knowledge of various nontechnical needs of a laboratory, usually acquired from a combination of previous work experience and/or schooling

Responsibilities

Accessions patient information accurately into Laboratory computer system.
Checks all requests for proper and accurate patient information.
Consults with Supervisor, Lead or Technologist when unclear or unusual requests received.
Notifies physicians, nursing units, clinics etc. when sample received is either inappropriate for testing or otherwise compromised.
Distributes samples accordingly after processing, ensuring they are routed to appropriate areas in the laboratory.
Distributes STAT requests in a timely as well as appropriate manner.
Answers telephones, responds to inquiries regarding testing status, gives out results, transfers calls as necessary, and answers all inquiries in a polite and efficient manner.
Accurately takes results from Reference labs.
Assists with media preparation, reagent preparations, and glassware preparation when requested.
Centrifuges, aliquots, plates specimens to media, or otherwise processes specimens to assure testing can be performed in a timely and appropriate manner.
Communicates with physicians, nurses, visitors and other laboratory/ hospital staff in a cooperative and courteous manner, responding to their needs appropriately with minimal waiting time.
Follows all departmental policies regarding attendance, punctuality and health and safety.
Follows procedures for properly identifying patients.
Ensures the use of proper technique when performing venipunctures or capillary sticks, proper type of sample collected as well as proper handling of sample during transport.
Independently resolves problems encountered in routine work.
Recognizes problems or requests which require Supervisor and/or Technologist assistance when appropriate.
Keeps current with all laboratory procedures, techniques and changes in all areas of the laboratory through which he or she rotates.
Keeps work areas well stocked with necessary supplies and notifies appropriate personnel when inventory levels are low.
Keeps all work areas clean and disposes of all waste appropriately.
Maintains all logs, records and data etc. in a legible and precise manner.
Maintains inventory of supplies and keeps area of laboratory stocked as required.
Responsible for keeping nursing units stocked with phlebotomy supplies.
Rotates through all areas of department as required including, specimen receiving, microbiology, billing, answering phones, accessioning, spin/aliquot and phlebotomy (both in-patient and outpatient).
Obtains blood specimens from outpatients or inpatients, following all laboratory guidelines and policies.
Performs all patients' draws in a timely and efficient manner.
Follows laboratory polices for all urgent and STAT draw requests.
Prepares and packages samples for sending out to appropriate reference labs, ensuring that all paperwork has been properly filled out and is accurate and legible.
Prints reports and faxes; sends via US mail or interdepartmental mail as requested.
Provides orientation and training to Lab Assistants.
Orients new employees to general procedures in the lab; trains them in the performance of nontechnical duties.
Receives samples via the pneumatic system, couriers, patients, or other hospital personnel.
Deals with patient's samples in an appropriate and efficient manner, distributing to the appropriate area of the laboratory or routing to other hospital departments as necessary according to procedure.
Reports promptly to Supervisor or Lead any abnormal circumstances with equipment, machinery or other problems that may exist in a prompt manner.
Understands patient care and laboratory priorities and independently assists others to ensure efficient workflow.
Utilizes Age-specific competencies and techniques in dealing with children that are appropriate for their level of development and conveys concern for patient.
