About The Position

This is a Full Time Position. The Lab Assistant 1 will be a positive and supportive team member, treating all customers professionally and courteously. They will demonstrate a professional and caring attitude, remaining compliant with all departmental and hospital policies, procedures, and regulations, including infection control, HIPPA, safety, and risk management. This role involves interacting with other departments to solve problems and improve processes, attending monthly staff meetings, and serving as a liaison between clinic and hospital labs. Responsibilities include keeping supplies stocked and ordered, ensuring accurate patient demographics and test entries, providing specimen collection instructions, answering the telephone, performing phlebotomy for all ages, preparing specimens for shipping, collecting various samples (blood cultures, throat, nares, nasopharyngeal), performing drug and breath alcohol screens, paternity collections, participating in proficiency testing, calling critical values, performing CLIA waived testing and associated quality control, and handling blood products. The role also includes responding to Code Blue and Traumas, using two patient identifiers, applying age-appropriate guidelines, performing daily glucometer quality control, and disposing of sharps containers. Additionally, the position requires reconciliation of DTC reports and performing other assigned duties. Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must successfully pass a background check.
  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and breath alcohol test (if applicable).
  • Must complete an Employee Health meeting prior to starting employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Phlebotomy certification.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (or be obtained within Ninety (90) days of hire.
  • One (1) year of phlebotomy experience.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a liaison between the clinic and hospital labs and as a reference for nursing staff.
  • Keeps supplies stocked and ordered as needed.
  • Ensures accurate patient demographics and tests are entered in computer data base.
  • Provides necessary instructions to customers for specimen collection.
  • Answers telephone and assists caller as needed.
  • Proficient in phlebotomy skills for all ages using appropriate collection devices.
  • Prepares specimens to ship to reference labs.
  • Performs venipunctures and collects blood cultures.
  • Collects throat, nares, and nasopharyngeal samples.
  • Starts tests and obtains specimens for glucose tolerance tests.
  • Performs drug and breath alcohol screens.
  • Performs paternity collections.
  • Participates in proficiency testing.
  • Calls critical values per department policy.
  • Proficient in performing CLIA waived testing.
  • Proficient in performing quality control for CLIA waived testing.
  • Pack, unpack, and receive blood products.
  • Responds to Code Blue and Traumas.
  • Exhibits proper use of two patient identifiers.
  • Applies guidelines for age appropriate and patient mental status.
  • Performs quality control on Glucometer each day of use.
  • Disposes of and changes sharps containers.
  • Reconciles DTC reports.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Actively contributes to departmental and organization-wide performance improvement and continuous quality initiatives.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements, maintaining adherence to departmental, hospital, state, and federal standards and policies.
  • Follows all infection control, safety, and risk management procedures to maintain a safe environment for patients, the public, and staff.
