About The Position

The Lab Analyst II performs sample preparation, performs analytical and/or assay testing, and manages data in support of Materion's requirements for customers and the AS9100D Quality Management System. The Lab Analyst II reports to the Senior Analytical Chemist or Analytical Lab Manager as appropriate, with dotted line responsibility to the department lead.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, technical school, or GED required at a minimum.
  • 5 or more years of relevant analytical laboratory experience.
  • Basic to Intermediate mathematical calculations.
  • Interpretation of customer specifications.
  • Understand ASTM standards with guidance.
  • Follow directions to fulfill requirements for AS9100D.
  • Very proficient in speaking and writing the English language.
  • Export compliance eligibility for access to U.S. controlled technology (ITAR and EAR).

Nice To Haves

  • A two- or four-year degree (preferably in a STEM field).

Responsibilities

  • Work with the department lead to receive training, use the QMS software to access and acknowledge training documents and work instructions.
  • Provide training to other lab personnel as required.
  • Comply with all procedures and good laboratory practices.
  • Provide input for improvement of standard procedures regarding sample preparation and instrumental analysis.
  • Follow standard procedures regarding sample preparation prior to instrumental analysis; this entails using rolling and cutting equipment, very accurate weighing of samples, hot plate or microwave acid digestion of samples, and accurate dilutions among other common laboratory procedures; attention to detail is a key requirement.
  • Perform testing and data recording for provided samples using techniques such as Inductively Coupled Plasma – Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES), Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometery (GDMS), Instrumental Gas Analysis (IGA), Tap Density, Screen Sieve Analysis, Average Particle Diameter, Titration, Metallography (Grain Size, % Recrystallization, Hardness), and Tensile Testing.
  • Maintain open and active communication with managers regarding workflow, issues, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Perform basic cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
  • Provide training and guidance to other lab personnel on analytical methods and practices.
  • Able to maintain a safe, clean work environment, including the handling and movement of bulk acids.
  • Proficient in the use of Excel functions, SAP and other standard office software.
