About The Position

This is a full-time position for a Lab Aide/Phlebotomist. The role involves performing phlebotomies and capillary punctures on patients of all age ranges, preparing and distributing specimens, and ensuring accurate specimen collection and labeling. The position also includes test order entry, handling phone orders from physicians, general lab cleaning and maintenance, and assisting with office routines. Additional duties include performing breath alcohol testing and collecting urine drug of abuse screens. The ideal candidate must have excellent communication and organizational skills, outstanding grooming habits, and an outgoing personality due to extensive patient contact.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous healthcare and phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Maintain Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) certification, renew every two years.
  • Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
  • Requires the ability to distinguish letters or symbols.
  • Use of office equipment such as computer terminals, telephones, or copiers is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform phlebotomies and capillary punctures on inpatients and outpatients, obtaining adequate specimens from all patient age ranges (neonatal to geriatric).
  • Prepare, organize, and distribute specimens in the lab for testing.
  • Collect specimens at the proper time according to procedure, including STAT specimens within 15 minutes of notification.
  • Correctly identify patients using two identifiers prior to specimen collection.
  • Correctly label patient specimens with patient name, date, identification number, time, and phlebotomist initials.
  • Perform test order entry for laboratory testing.
  • Take phone orders from physicians for patient testing and complete required documentation.
  • Perform general cleaning, wash glassware, and maintain the blood collection area and equipment.
  • Function in the office if necessary, including filing, logging, and looking up results.
  • Perform breath alcohol testing and collect urine drug of abuse screens according to procedure.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
