About The Position

Chico Animal Hospital is seeking a Knowledge Base & Training Content Specialist to manage and improve its extensive documentation. This part-time, long-term role (~20 hours/week) involves verifying, enhancing, and maintaining a knowledge base of over 500 pages within the BookStack platform. The specialist will interview and shadow staff to ensure accuracy, create visual aids like photos and screenshots, manage a prioritized work queue with monthly targets, and oversee the review cycle to prevent protocols from becoming outdated. This position also involves reporting on key metrics and evolving the documentation style guide. Over time, there is an opportunity to develop interactive staff training courses in Moodle, including quizzes and onboarding modules, based on the refined documentation. The role requires excellent written communication skills, strong self-direction, comfort with learning new software, and the ability to work effectively within a busy animal hospital environment.

Requirements

  • Exceptional written English: ability to turn verbal explanations into clear, step-by-step procedures.
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills.
  • Proven self-direction: ability to plan and execute work independently with goals and a queue.
  • Comfortable interviewing people and extracting knowledge from busy staff.
  • Basic computer proficiency.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new software platforms independently (BookStack, Moodle).
  • Comfortable taking and annotating photos/screenshots using common tools.
  • Able to work on-site in Chico, CA during business hours (Mon–Fri, ~8am–5pm window; exact schedule flexible).
  • Comfortable working inside an active animal hospital environment (around animals, medical procedures, and occasional difficult situations).

  • Prior experience with wikis, LMS platforms, or documentation tools.

Responsibilities

  • Verify accuracy of the knowledge base by interviewing and shadowing staff.
  • Fix outdated information and write missing content for the knowledge base.
  • Enhance documentation with photos, screenshots, and annotated images.
  • Work from a prioritized queue of pages flagged for review, formatting improvements, and content gaps.
  • Meet clear monthly targets for documentation updates.
  • Run the review cycle to ensure no protocol becomes stale.
  • Report simple monthly metrics on documentation status.
  • Own and evolve the documentation style guide.
  • Build interactive staff training courses in Moodle (quizzes, onboarding modules) from refined documentation.
  • Observe procedures and ask questions without disrupting patient care.
