About The Position

The Kitchen Steward works under the supervision of the Manager of Food Services, to ensure the proper maintenance of food service facilities and equipment. This role requires a high level of professionalism, commitment, and adaptability to uphold Coalition Values and maintain an environment of dignity, respect, and cooperation.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
  • At least one (1) year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Ability to stand, sit, kneel, or crouch for extended periods.
  • Safely climb up and down ladders.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds for short periods of time.
  • Safely use cleaning tools such as brooms, mops, scrub brushes, and common cleaning chemicals.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Effective and reliable team player with appropriate communication skills.
  • Work independently and employ critical thinking skills to problem-solve issues.
  • Follow instructions from supervisors and communicate effectively with team members and volunteers.
  • Demonstrate respect, compassion, and kindness toward others.
  • Dependable and punctual.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in food storage areas, including refrigerators, freezers, and dry storage shelves.
  • Thoroughly clean and sanitize dining hall tables, chairs, and countertops before and after meal service.
  • Wash, rinse, and sanitize dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and other food service equipment using manual, chemical, and/or mechanical methods.
  • Sweep, mop, and vacuum dining hall floors to maintain cleanliness and prevent slip hazards.
  • Empty and sanitize trash receptacles regularly to ensure a hygienic environment.
  • Assist in the assembly and packaging of meals for distribution, ensuring accurate portioning and presentation.
  • Unload food and non-food products into food pantry areas, coolers, and freezers using safe lifting, pulling, and pushing practices.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, cleaning, and sanitizing of food service equipment, including ovens, steamers, ice machines, etc.
  • Clean and maintain various types of floors, walls, surfaces, and ceiling vents.
  • Maintain assigned equipment (including dishwashers) in optimal condition by clearing food and debris prior to and after use.
  • Collaborate with the Food Services Cook when working with volunteer groups and individuals on safe food preparation, serving, and cleaning as needed.
  • Assist the Food Services Cook with food preparation activities as needed, including chopping vegetables, preparing ingredients, and following recipes under the guidance of kitchen staff.
  • Operate kitchen equipment such as mixers, slicers, and food processors safely and efficiently as needed.
  • Receive and inspect incoming food deliveries to ensure quality and freshness under the guidance of the Food Services Cook.
  • Properly store food items in designated areas, adhering to FIFO (First In, First Out) principles to minimize waste.
  • Report kitchen accidents or violations of food safety codes and procedures to the Kitchen Services Manager or other management staff promptly.
  • Ensure donors complete food donation forms to be provided to the Development team for processing.
  • Label perishable food donations with the date of receipt upon acceptance from donors.
  • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
