About The Position

Global Impact Group LLC is a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB) and ISO 9001 / ISO 17100 certified provider of interpretation and translation services. We deliver secure, high-quality language access in 80+ spoken and signed languages for USCIS and other federal agencies. We are seeking Kirundi Over-the-Phone Interpreters (OPI) to support our USCIS contract. Kirundi, a Bantu language spoken in Burundi and neighboring countries (Tanzania, DR Congo, Rwanda), is a rare but important East African language often needed for asylum and immigration cases.

Requirements

Native or near-native fluency in Kirundi and English (knowledge of Kinyarwanda is a plus, as they are closely related).
2+ years of professional interpreting experience (immigration, asylum, legal, NGO, medical, or community preferred).
Strong understanding of interpreter ethics, confidentiality, and impartiality.
Cultural familiarity with Burundian and East African contexts.
Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident eligible for Tier 3/Tier 5 federal clearance.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of Kinyarwanda is a plus, as they are closely related.
Certifications (community, court, medical, NGO interpreting credentials preferred).

Responsibilities

Provide real-time Kirundi ↔ English telephonic interpretation for USCIS interviews, hearings, and asylum proceedings.
Interpret with accuracy, neutrality, and professionalism in sensitive immigration and legal contexts.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with USCIS/DHS interpreter ethics standards.
Handle both scheduled assignments and urgent/surge interpretation requests.
Participate in compliance training, QA audits, and professional development.
