About The Position

This safety-sensitive position is responsible for the care and maintenance of the kennel area, ensuring the health and welfare of quarantined and adoptable animals, as well as animals involved in criminal cases.

Requirements

  • Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, notes, letters, memos, care plans, and animal medical instructions.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to prepare and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to compute medical dosage rates or the correct amount for animals.
  • Ability to utilize common sense understanding in order to carry out written, oral, or diagrammed instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several known variables in situations of a routine nature.

  • Responsible for maintenance and serviceability of assigned equipment or other city property that is used in job performance.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and disinfects kennels daily.
  • Feeds and waters animals daily.
  • Performs initial intake on all animals, including medical evaluation, drawing blood for testing, administering vaccinations, and treating minor illnesses daily.
  • Prepares animals for adoption daily.
  • Cleans equipment such as cages, traps, and travel kennels daily.
  • Performs kennel maintenance and small repairs daily.
  • May perform or assist with euthanasia and sedation of animals as needed.
  • Performs maintenance on grounds, operating mower, weed eater, sprayer, and pressure washer as needed.
  • Operates a city vehicle for essential functions as needed.
  • Oversees volunteers, public service workers, and inmate labor as needed.
  • May occasionally perform desk duties and assist the dispatcher by dispatching calls for service through the police radio system, running criminal history checks, and conducting vehicle and warrant checks for Animal Control Officers as needed.
  • Transports and disposes of deceased animals to an appropriate location weekly or as needed.
  • Posts information about animals on Facebook, keeping the public aware of lost or found pets and pets for adoption daily.
  • Researches databases from ACIC/NCIC, local utility companies, and other information areas in an attempt to reunite pets and owners daily or as needed.
  • Accesses animal narcotics, animal medications, and medical supplies, monitoring these supplies and inventory, and reporting needs to the Director or Senior ACO daily.
  • Performs any other related duties as required or assigned.
