About The Position

The Juvenile Supervision Officer (JSO) is responsible for the direct supervision of all resident's daily activities, ensuring safety and order. This includes overseeing educational programs, arts and crafts, and outdoor activities. The role may also involve one-to-one supervision for residents classified as moderate or high risk for suicide. JSOs conduct random observation checks, monitor and document resident behavior, and assign housekeeping details. They are responsible for implementing treatment plans, corrective disciplinary strategies, and facilitating cognitive skill and nurture groups. The position requires maintaining resident accountability, radioing movements and incidents, completing written reports, and providing crisis coping techniques. JSOs also monitor security and fire alarm systems, transport residents off-site, and maintain communication with other staff. They may assist in incident investigations and must be able to apply physical restraints when necessary. Adherence to professional conduct, ethical behavior, and policies related to PREA, TJJD, and Cameron County is mandatory. This role requires being a role model and attending required staff meetings and trainings. Employment is contingent upon funding availability and is at-will.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Over twenty-one (21) years of age.
Current Texas Driver's License.
Current automobile insurance.
Ability to communicate effectively (reading, writing, and understanding) in English.
Able to submit to a drug urinalysis pre-screening exam.
Able to pass a criminal background check, with any criminal record cleared through the Texas Juvenile Justice Department requirements.
Ability to adhere to facility's strength based behavior modification approach.
Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a team.
Ability to reason and make judgments and decisions.
Ability to maintain resident and program confidentiality.
Ability to connect with residents while still being able to implement rules, boundaries and accountability.

Nice To Haves

Associate's Degree in a related field of criminal justice, psychology, or government.

Ability to assist in investigating incidents involving residents.
Ability to properly apply a physical restraint as instructed by Handle With Care, when a resident is physically harming themselves or others, property damage over $50 and/or attempting to escape.
Ability to adhere, maintain, and comply with professional conduct and ethical behavior consistent with the standards and policies and procedures expected by the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), TJJD, Cameron County, and Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department (CCJJD) at all time, both on duty and off duty.
Ability to adhere and comply with all PREA standards and will follow zero tolerance towards all forms of sexual abuse and sexual harassment following a duty to report immediately, without reservation any possible PREA violation.
Ability to adhere and comply with all TJJD standards to include Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation (ANE) standards following a duty to report, without reservation any standard violation and cooperate with all ANE investigations.
Ability to adhere and comply CCJJD's and Cameron County's policies and procedures and know how to keep abreast of any changes to said policies and procedures, including maintaining an effective safety program as established by Cameron County.
Ability to abide by all federal, state, and local laws; the nature of our profession requires being a good role model and setting a good example at all times.
Ability to attend staff meetings and trainings as required and scheduled.
Ability to perform any and all other duties as assigned by the Chief Juvenile Probation Officer and/or designee to include reassignment which is in the best interest of the department.

Responsibilities

Provide direct supervision of all resident's daily activities, including education programs, arts and crafts, and outdoor activities, while maintaining safety and order.
Provide one-to-one supervision for residents classified as moderate or high risk for suicide.
Conduct random observation checks on residents during non-program hours and when they are in their assigned room/housing unit.
Supervise residents on suicide classification and document observation checks as per the facility's Suicide Prevention Intervention Plan.
Monitor and document resident behavior during observation checks.
Assign and supervise residents in daily housekeeping details, ensuring the environment is safe, clean, and secure.
Immediately report all unsafe/unsecure areas to the shift supervisor.
Implement available treatment plans, corrective disciplinary strategies, and effective treatment intervention programs.
Ensure residents are aware of and understand their responsibilities and appropriate behaviors.
Facilitate cognitive skill groups and teamwork activities.
Facilitate and participate in Trust Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) nurture groups and teamwork activities.
Implement appropriate disciplinary sanctions and effective TBRI interventions while maintaining professional boundaries.
Observe and document resident's behavior and maintain basic discipline and control through consistent enforcement of rules, regulations, and procedures.
Maintain accountability of residents assigned to your care.
Radio all movements, non-compliant behavior, and head counts into control.
Summarize information and complete written reports on incidents.
Provide individual and crisis coping techniques such as de-escalation skills.
Monitor security and fire alarm systems, including closed circuit monitors.
Transport residents to off-site locations, including medical appointments and funeral services.
Maintain communication with other staff to ensure continuity of care.
Provide oversight and participate in committees and special projects.
Assist in investigating incidents involving residents.
Properly apply a physical restraint as instructed by Handle With Care when necessary.
