About The Position

This position involves providing direct supervision of residents in a juvenile facility, ensuring safety, order, and security. The officer will observe and document resident behavior, provide crisis coping techniques, monitor security systems, and maintain communication with other staff for continuity of care. Responsibilities include investigating incidents, using de-escalation techniques, and applying physical restraints when necessary, all while adhering to strict professional conduct and ethical standards, including those set by the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), TJJD, and Cameron County policies.

Requirements

High School Diploma or Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
Must be over twenty-one (21) years of age (for state certification requirements).
Current Texas Driver's License.
Must have current automobile insurance.
Ability to communicate effectively (reading, writing, and understanding) in English.
Able to submit to a drug urinalysis pre-screening exam.
Able to pass a criminal background check. If the candidate for employment does have a criminal record, it must be cleared through the requirements as set forth by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
After Hire: Juvenile Supervision Officer Certification.
After Hire: Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification and First Aid (FA).
After Hire: Handle with Care (HWC) State Approved Restraint Technique Certification.

Nice To Haves

Some college education in a related field.
Six (6) months experience in direct juvenile care.
Bilingual is preferred.
Visible tattoos, sleeves or cover ups must be worn.

Responsibilities

Provide direct supervision of all residents and maintain safety and order.
Maintain accountability of all residents and equipment, ensuring a safe, clean, and secure environment.
Observe and document resident behavior during C shift.
Provide individual and crisis coping techniques.
Monitor security and fire alarm systems, including closed circuit monitors.
Maintain communication with other staff to ensure continuity of care.
Assist in investigating incidents involving residents.
Use Verbal De-escalation techniques to maintain control of situations.
Properly apply a physical restraint as instructed by Handle With Care, when a resident is physically harming themselves or others, serious property damage or escape/attempting to escape.
Adhere, maintain, and comply with professional conduct and ethical behavior consistent with the standards and policies and procedures expected by the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA), TJJD, Cameron County, and Cameron County Juvenile Justice Department (CCJJD) at all time, both on duty and off duty.
Adhere and comply with all PREA standards and will follow zero tolerance towards all forms of sexual abuse and sexual harassment.
Adhere and comply with all TJJD standards to include Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation (ANE) standards and cooperate with all ANE investigations.
Adhere and comply CCJJD's and Cameron County's policies and procedures and know how to keep abreast of any changes to said policies and procedures, including maintaining an effective safety program as established by Cameron County.
Abide by all federal, state, and local laws; act as a role model and set a good example at all times.
Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
Perform any and all other duties as assigned by the Chief Juvenile Probation Officer and/or designee to include reassignment which is in the best interest of the department.
