About The Position

This position is open to Alaska Residents only. This position will be filled at either the 1 or 2 level depending on the applicant’s qualifications and job experience. The Division of Juvenile Justice is recruiting to fill a Juvenile Probation Officer 1/2 position in Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow) at Utqiagvik Juvenile Probation. Provide a continuum of interventions and supervision of accused and adjudicated juvenile offenders on your dynamic caseload. Through evidence-based practices, motivate and guide youth, broker services, and steer youth towards accountability for their actions, community restoration, and development of competencies to lead productive and crime free adult lives. Represent the Division of Juvenile Justice in court proceedings. The services you provide will be challenging but in return produce significant long-term benefits to youth served, their families, and the community.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the concepts, principles, and theories of human behavior and performance in various contexts, mental processes, or the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
  • Contributes to maintaining the integrity of the organization; displays high standards of ethical conduct and understands the impact of violating these standards on an organization, self, and others; is trustworthy.

  • Training in juvenile justice, criminal justice, criminology, sociology, social work, psychology, guidance and counseling, the behavioral sciences, or a closely related field and/or experience providing juvenile justice probation, adult probation, adult protection services, child protection services, or supervision of juvenile offenders in a juvenile justice facility; or providing care or service to delinquent juveniles.
  • Progressively responsible professional experience providing juvenile justice probation, adult probation, adult protection services, child protection services, or supervision of juvenile offenders in a juvenile justice facility; or providing care or service to delinquent juveniles.
  • Successful candidates are subject to a background investigation, criminal record check, fingerprinting, and must complete a medical examination to determine the essential duties of the position can be safely performed.
  • A valid Alaska driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
  • Requires frequent travel within the State.
  • Requires 20-hour annual training in one-on-one control tactics.
  • Requires the use of the Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) which includes passing a background investigation including fingerprinting.

Responsibilities

  • Provide a continuum of interventions and supervision of accused and adjudicated juvenile offenders on your dynamic caseload.
  • Through evidence-based practices, motivate and guide youth, broker services, and steer youth towards accountability for their actions, community restoration, and development of competencies to lead productive and crime free adult lives.
  • Represent the Division of Juvenile Justice in court proceedings.
  • Assume on-call duties on a rotating basis, afterhours on evenings and on weekends.
  • Supervise probationers which requires travel to outlying communities.
