About The Position

To provide efficient and effective casework services for those children who are diverted or who are under the jurisdiction of the Juvenile Court of Brazos County. This role involves securing data regarding physical, psychological, and social factors contributing to juveniles’ situation, preparing social history investigations and other reports for the Juvenile Court, arranging and participating in detention hearings, accompanying juveniles to Court, testifying when necessary, and preparing conditions for release. The position also requires transporting juveniles, taking urine samples, interviewing and counseling clients and their families, preparing case plans, conducting placement, home, and school visits, and complying with all case management standards as defined by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department. Additionally, the role involves making arrests, performing restraint techniques, maintaining required training hours for certification, being on call 24 hours a day with irregular work hours, following departmental policies, abiding by the TJJD Code of Ethics, and maintaining security and confidentiality of case information.

Requirements

  • Must be 21 years of age, or older.
  • Must be able to meet criteria for certification as a Juvenile Probation Officer and Juvenile Supervision Officer through TJJD.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with appropriate liability auto insurance coverage.
  • Must be able to meet all criteria for certification as a probation officer through TJJD which includes a certified copy of transcript with written proof of accreditation of your college or university as well as written proof (on employer’s letterhead) of required work experience from previous employer (which should include dates of employment and description of job duties and performance), non-disqualifying criminal history/sex offender registration background check.
  • An understanding of human behavioral patterns and the ability to apply good judgment in dealing with troubled youth and their families.
  • Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Must possess basic computer knowledge and competence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Must have physical ability to make arrests and perform restraint techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Secure data regarding physical, psychological, and social factors contributing to juveniles’ situation, and prepare social history investigations and other reports for the Juvenile Court.
  • Arrange and participate in detention hearings.
  • Accompany juveniles to Court, and testify when necessary; and, prepare conditions for which juvenile may be released when necessary.
  • Transport juveniles to various locations.
  • Take urine samples from clients.
  • Interview and counsel children and their families.
  • Prepare case plans, case plan reviews and exit plans.
  • Conduct placement visits, home visits and school visits.
  • Comply with all case management standards as defined by Texas Juvenile Justice Department.
  • Make arrests and perform restraint techniques.
  • Maintain 80 hours biannually of approved training to maintain JPO and JSO certification.
  • Be on call 24 hours a day, subject to irregular work hours.
  • Follow established policies, procedures and practices of the department.
  • Abide by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department Code of Ethics.
  • Maintain security and confidentiality of all case information, files and chronos as required by the Texas Family Code.
  • Facilitates and participates in departmental programs.
