About The Position

This position is responsible for adhering to agency and facility policies and procedures, maintaining a safe and secure environment for youth, staff, and themselves. The role involves daily routine inspections of the detention facility, supervising and instructing workers in the care and custody of youth, and ensuring adequate safeguards for detained youth. Administrative functions include staff orientation and training, managing leave and attendance, preparing evaluations and reports, maintaining key control, initiating disciplinary actions, and preparing/reviewing confinement reports. The position ensures compliance with Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) and facility policies, promotes good management and leadership practices, and assures schedules are followed. It also involves performing special details or projects, ensuring compliance with standards and proper client release procedures, assisting personnel with youth behavior and personal problems, evaluating youth, and participating in progress reports. The role acts as a facility representative to the public and interprets policies in the absence of higher-ranking officials. Daily staff assignments are made to ensure adequate staffing, and participation in daily briefings includes providing status reports and making key assignments. The position takes a leadership role in monitoring data entries in Master Control and the Admissions/Release Office, completing required paperwork accurately and legibly, and ensuring proper completion and equitable application of staff overtime rosters. It requires adherence to state regulations and the relevant bargaining unit's master contract. A valid Driver License is mandatory, with reporting of any changes within 72 hours. The role ensures proper care, storage, and accounting of youth clothing, daily provision of clean socks and underwear, and accountability for searching youth at admission. It coordinates, directs, and monitors daily workloads, maintains effective supervision of youth and staff, and ensures safety and security. Prompt communication with supervisory staff regarding subordinate leave is crucial to ensure awareness of daily staffing patterns and coverage. The position requires successful completion of training for medication dispensing and responsible for bringing sick call lists and unusual medical problems to the facility nurse's attention. This position works a non-traditional schedule and may be required to work various shifts based on facility needs. It involves attending required meetings and all training mandated by DJJ's Direct Care Training Policy. In emergencies, CPR, AED, and First Aid techniques are utilized. The role ensures timely reporting of all Central Communication Center (CCC) reportable incidents, completes documentation, keeps administration informed, and assists with internal investigations. Daily facility reports and logs are reviewed for timeliness and accuracy, and subordinate staff are ensured to use and review relevant JJIS and DFMS reports. Compliance with the Prompt Payment Compliance Law is required. Other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the Department of Juvenile Justice Detention Services Manual, Federal and State rules and regulations, and DJJ and facility policies and procedures.
  • Ability to supervise staff and youth.
  • Ability to physically handle and interact with violent youth.
  • Ability to work overtime hours in order to ensure staff coverage and maintain security.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Must be a high school graduate or its equivalent as determined by the department.
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement or have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Must not have pleaded guilty or no lo contendere to or be found guilty of any felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement after September 30, 1999, notwithstanding suspension of sentence or withholding of adjudication.
  • Must abide by all provisions of s. 985.644 (1), regarding fingerprinting and background investigations and other screening requirements for personnel.
  • Must execute and submit to the department an affidavit-of-application form, attesting to his or her compliance with sub paragraphs 1-4.
  • Must have a valid Driver License.
  • Must obtain a valid Florida state driver’s license within 30 days of hire if initially hired with an out-of-state license.
  • Must have a three-year acceptable driving record if transporting youth.
  • Must be certified in accordance with State of Florida Department of Juvenile Justice direct care training policy or obtain such certification within 180 days of employment.
  • Must pass Ergometric's IMPACT Assessment and Training Test if not currently in the state system as a direct care worker for DJJ at the time of application.

  • Attends and successfully completes all training required by DJJ’s Direct Care Training Policy and other training as assigned and required.
  • In case of an emergency, will use the Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automatic External Defibrillator (AED), and First Aid techniques and procedures taught during certification training.
  • Ensures that all Central Communication Center (CCC) reportable incidents are reported on a timely basis.
