DCJ Juvenile Investigator
About The Position
The State of Connecticut, Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) is recruiting for one (1) full-time DCJ Juvenile Investigator for Juvenile Matters in Rockville, Waterford, and Willimantic. The position is located in Tolland County. This position generally works Monday through Friday, based on a 40-hour work week, with core hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Candidates may be required to travel within the state in the course of their daily work. The individual in this role will screen, review, prioritize and prepare incoming files; ensure all case file information necessary for prosecuting is complete; obtain relevant documentation (e.g., police reports, hospital records, toxicology laboratory reports, etc.); locate individuals; prepare case synopsis and chronology for prosecutor; and respond to inquiries from victims regarding case progress. The Division of Criminal Justice and its employees are committed to the fair and equal administration of justice in Connecticut. Requirements
- Two (2) years of experience as a law enforcement officer
- Considerable knowledge of relevant state laws and regulations
- Considerable knowledge of investigative methods and techniques
- Knowledge of rules of evidence and legal processes
- Considerable interpersonal skills
- Considerable oral and written communication skills
- Considerable interviewing skills
- Ability to gather and interpret data
- Must have a valid motor vehicle operator license
- Must have a vehicle available for daily business use
Nice To Haves
- A Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience
- Experience with standard office procedures and computer software programs (Microsoft Office)
- Demonstrated experience in a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations
- Experience using computers to work with law enforcement agencies to secure and manage digital evidence such as photographs, videos, 911 calls, and recordings from body and dashboard cameras
Responsibilities
- Screen, review, prioritize and prepare incoming files
- Ensure all case file information necessary for prosecuting is complete
- Obtain relevant documentation (e.g. police reports, hospital records, toxicology laboratory reports, etc.)
- Locate individuals
- Prepare case synopsis and chronology for prosecutor
- Respond to inquiries from victims regarding case progress
- Conduct investigations related to preparation and prosecution of juvenile delinquency offenses and Families With Service Needs petitions
- Interview clients and victims
- Locate and interview potential witnesses
- Act as a liaison with law enforcement agencies
- Prepare charts and diagrams related to trial
- Act as liaison with forensic witnesses
- Assess client potential and eligibility for placement and rehabilitative programs
- Prepare written reports of investigations
- Confer with juvenile prosecutor regarding investigative activities
- Serve subpoenas and related legal documents
- Maintain liaison with DCJ Inspectors, DCJ Investigators, probation staff and a variety of other persons or agencies
- Examine and photograph crime scenes and other relevant locations
- Arrange referral to social service agencies
- Transport clients and victims to court proceedings
- Testify on results of investigations
