About The Position

Adelphoi Western Region – Highland Detention at Shuman is seeking committed individuals to join a team supporting young people in crisis. This role offers an opportunity to be part of a new approach to helping youth with challenges in a secure setting. The position involves working with local law enforcement and juvenile authorities to assist youth with immediate shelter needs while longer-term treatment interventions are prepared. The counselor will act as a first point of contact, explaining situations, setting expectations, and addressing immediate needs. A key aspect of the role is sustaining a group environment based on safety, security, and trust to maintain an orderly routine and guide youth behavior. A rigorous training program will prepare counselors to build relationships, address behaviors, and maintain healthy living arrangements.

Requirements

The ability to demonstrate clear 1:1 communication, establish rapport with youth, and follow a strict routine that maximizes the stability of the living environment.
A level of fitness that permits assisting with the physical care and safety of individuals and groups for the benefit of all program members.
A minimum level of study that indicates the capacity to understand and apply regulations as they pertain to the secure setting.
Minimum of 60 college credits required.
Safely perform physical interventions and restraints with individuals who may weigh 200+ pounds, using approved techniques.
Stand, walk, and respond quickly throughout the shift.
Successfully complete and maintain certification in Adelphoi’s crisis intervention / restraint training and pass any required physical abilities assessment.

Responsibilities

Work with local law enforcement officials and juvenile authorities assisting youth with their urgent shelter needs while longer-term treatment interventions are prepared.
Act as a point of first contact to explain to youth their situation, set roles and expectations as they enter into the program, and provide for their immediate needs.
Sustain a group environment based on safety, security, and trust that enables an orderly and consistent routine in directing youth behavior.
Complete a rigorous training program that will prepare you to build relationships with boundaries, address youth behaviors, and maintain healthy living arrangements.
