About The Position

The Juvenile Correctional Lieutenant helps positively impact the lives of youth in the Department of Juvenile Justice by maintaining a safe, therapeutic, and educational environment. The role provides support, guidance, and structure by modeling pro-social behaviors such as empathy, cooperation, and professionalism. The lieutenant supervises, guides, and instructs subordinate staff and acts as shift supervisor for a specific unit or program. The position is with the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice at Claxton RYDC in Claxton, Georgia. The shift is rotating. The position is unclassified and is open to internal and external applicants. The selected applicant will be subject to a reference check and criminal background check, where applicable.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
One year of experience as a Juvenile Correctional Officer Sergeant (PSP223) or equivalent, or two years of military experience at rank E-5 or higher.
Possess and maintain State of Georgia P.O.S.T. certification within the first six months of employment.
Meet agency-established physical agility standards and successfully complete a validated physical agility assessment before hiring and at other intervals as required by agency policy.

Responsibilities

Assume responsibility for the custody and care of youth in accordance with department policies and standard operating procedures.
Maintain order by intervening in inappropriate behavior and through active supervision.
Plan and supervise the work of assigned staff, including training, selecting, and orienting new subordinates.
Complete paperwork, maintain records, and develop work and security procedures.
Supervise contraband searches and inspections, and maintain control over logs, keys, tools, and weapons.
Enforce facility rules and review youth information to identify issues requiring special attention.
Act as shift supervisor for a specific unit or program.
Model pro-social behaviors, including empathy, cooperation, and professionalism, while providing support, guidance, and structure to youth.
