About The Position

Larchmont Yacht Club is seeking motivated and knowledgeable Sailing Instructors for its 2027 Junior Sailing Program. This program engages over 230 sailors each summer, supported by a team of instructors and coaches. The role involves working with sailors of all levels, from beginners to competitive racers, in various boat classes including Optis, C420s, Fevas, Lasers (ILCA), and keelboats. It's a hands-on position ideal for those looking to develop leadership skills while helping young sailors build confidence and competence on the water. The position offers opportunities for private lessons, attending regattas, and participating in weekly coach practices. Instructors will report to the Sailing Director and are expected to participate in key program events.

Requirements

  • US Sailing Level 1 certification (or international equivalents, or must be scheduled within two weeks of accepting offer).
  • US Sailing or US Powerboating Safe Powerboat Handling certification.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (valid within one year of the course).
  • Safe Sport certification.
  • Valid New York State Boating License or a license from a reciprocal state (international equivalents will be considered).
  • Strong sailing background and prior coaching experience.
  • Confident operating powerboats and managing group safety on the water.
  • Positive communicator with a team-first attitude.
  • Ability to mentor and inspire youth sailors and Junior Instructors.
  • Dependable, organized, and able to adapt to changing situations.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more.
  • Must be comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as assigned.
  • Must comply with all Club policies and safety procedures.

  • Indicate which fleet you are most interested in coaching: Optimist, ILCA, Feva, C420, Sonar, Ideal 18s, or Seamanship/Keelboat.

Responsibilities

  • Coach junior sailors across a range of skill levels in Optis, Fevas, C420s, Lasers, Sonars, Ideal 18s, or keelboats.
  • Lead safe and structured on-water sessions, including drills, instruction, and racing.
  • Collaborate with fellow instructors to develop and deliver engaging lesson plans.
  • Offer individualized feedback and support to help sailors improve.
  • Maintain and oversee the care of boats, coach equipment, and waterfront areas.
  • Act as a mentor and role model for Junior Instructors and sailors.
  • Uphold LYC’s values of sportsmanship, professionalism, and teamwork.
