About The Position

Ashby is seeking a Junior Design Engineer to join their team. This role is unique in that it requires excellence in both design and coding, allowing individuals to combine their skills in design and technical implementation. The Design Engineer at Ashby works on challenging design problems, enhances the in-house design system, and consults with Product Engineers on bespoke design work. The role offers the opportunity to work on a product with over 100,000 weekly active users and collaborate with notable customers. The position is championed by the VP of Engineering and has seen consistent growth and commitment since its inception.

Requirements

  • No more than 2 years of industry experience as a designer or engineer.
  • Showcase projects (personal or professional) with at least a couple of users that demonstrate great visual taste.
  • Showcase burgeoning talent in both UI/UX and Engineering.
  • Good proficiency in both Design and Engineering.
  • Experience designing products and shipping code to hundreds of users (even if through side projects).
  • Proficiency with TypeScript, React, and CSS.
  • Ability to work on customer issues and investigations.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate deliberately.

  • Proficiency with backend technologies.
  • Experience with a formal Design Engineer title.
  • Major contributions to a design system.
  • Designed and implemented features for hundreds of users and iterated on them through user feedback.

Responsibilities

  • Design and code features for the Ashby product.
  • Work on challenging design problems.
  • Help others improve their designs by expanding and enhancing the in-house design system.
  • Consult on bespoke design work needed by Product Engineers.
  • Redesign the mobile web app, including customer interviews, wireframing, implementing the design system, and creating polished UI.
  • Build flexible, composable components for the design system.
  • Improve the information hierarchy and scannability of designs for features like candidate assessment viewing.
  • Ship fast and iterate on designs based on user feedback and business needs.
  • Contribute to setting and improving the visual design bar for the application.
  • Collaborate with Product Managers and Designers on strategy and problem briefs.
  • Take ownership of projects from research and spec writing to wireframing and end-to-end implementation.
  • Participate in pair programming, collaborative design system work, and discussions about decisions.
  • Contribute to the codebase and best practices from day one.
  • Increase leverage through contributions to developer tooling, common components, and AI-powered tools.
