About The Position

The Ministry of Assisted Living and Social Services leads housing, assisted living and continuing care, seniors, income, employment and homelessness supports, disability services, and other social-based programs. The Housing Division works to ensure Albertans have access to safe, affordable, and appropriate housing options that support strong and sustainable communities. With the housing division the Alberta Social Housing Corporation branch and Digital and Business Solutions unit deliver IT and reporting solutions that support the work of the ministry. This is an exciting opportunity for a data professional who is motivated by turning information into insights and supporting evidence-based decisions that strengthen housing programs and services across the province. In this role, you will work closely with program areas, subject matter experts, and users to understand business needs and translate them into meaningful analytical requirements. You will analyze and interpret complex program data, contribute to the development of reports and dashboards, and support evidence-based decision-making across Housing programs.

Requirements

  • University graduation in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems and Business Analytics; no experience required; or equivalent.
  • A strong analytical mindset with the ability to learn new technologies, tools, and analytical methodologies quickly.
  • Experience analyzing, organizing, and interpreting information to support business decision-making.
  • Practical experience developing basic reports, dashboards, or visualizations using Power BI.
  • Ability to manage and organize technical documentation, business requirements, and analytical materials in a structured and efficient manner.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment and build positive working relationships.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work.
  • Ability to prioritize competing demands, manage multiple tasks, and meet established deadlines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working within the Alberta Public Service, broader public sector, or a complex organizational environment.
  • Experience supporting housing, social services, infrastructure, capital planning, or public policy programs.
  • Familiarity with Power BI data models, DAX calculations, and dashboard design principles.
  • Experience preparing technical documentation, data dictionaries, metadata, or process documentation.

  • Experience using analytical tools such as Power BI, SQL, Excel Power Query, Microsoft Fabric, or similar business intelligence solutions.

  • Experience supporting program reporting, performance measurement, or operational analysis.
  • Exposure to SQL, relational databases, Microsoft Fabric, or other data and reporting technologies.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams to support business objectives and reporting needs.
  • Knowledge of analytical best practices, reporting standards, and data governance principles.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and interprets data related to Housing's operating and capital programs to support informed program management and policy development.
  • Aggregates data from multiple primary and secondary sources to answer defined business and program questions.
  • Applies established analytical methodologies to identify trends, patterns, variances, and emerging issues.
  • Interprets analytical findings within the context of business processes, program objectives, and operational priorities.
  • Conducts quantitative and qualitative analysis to support operational decision-making and policy discussions.
  • Prepares clear and concise summaries of findings, observations, and recommendations for non-technical audiences.
  • Supports evidence-based planning through the provision of accurate and actionable insights.
  • Assists in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of data models, datasets, and Power BI reporting solutions.
  • Creates dashboards, reports, and visualizations that communicate program performance, trends, outcomes, and progress.
  • Supports enhancements to reporting tools to improve functionality, accessibility, and user experience.
  • Collaborates with program areas to ensure reporting products meet business needs and reporting requirements.
  • Tests, validates, and verifies analytical outputs prior to release to ensure accuracy and consistency.
  • Supports the creation of standardized reporting processes and performance measures across Housing programs.
  • Supports data quality and integrity activities to ensure analytical outputs are accurate, reliable, and suitable for decision-making.
  • Supports data collection, validation, cleansing, and quality assurance activities.
  • Identifies data quality issues, inconsistencies, and gaps and escalating concerns as appropriate.
  • Assists with the investigation and resolution of data discrepancies in collaboration with analysts and business users.
  • Applies established data standards, business rules, and validation practices to ensure consistency of information.
  • Supports ongoing monitoring of data quality and reporting accuracy.
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of reliable and trusted data assets.
  • Participates in user engagement activities to support translating program and business needs into analytical requirements.
  • Participates in discussions with program staff and users to understand reporting and analytical needs.
  • Assists with the documentation of business requirements, assumptions, business definitions, and reporting specifications.
  • Supports the translation of business questions into analytical and technical requirements under the guidance of senior analysts.
  • Communicates analytical considerations, assumptions, limitations, and risks to users as appropriate.
  • Builds positive working relationships with program areas to support a client-focused approach to analytics and reporting.
  • Contributes to the identification and prioritization of reporting and information needs.
  • Develops and maintains analytical documentation to support transparency, continuity, and effective management of data assets.
  • Develops and maintains data dictionaries, metadata, business definitions, and documentation related to data sources.
  • Documents analytical methodologies, calculations, business rules, assumptions, and data processing activities.
  • Maintains organized project documentation, meeting records, requirements documentation, and supporting materials.
  • Supports consistent documentation standards and practices across reporting and analytical initiatives.
  • Assists with knowledge-sharing activities that support effective use of analytical tools and information assets.
  • Contributes to the ongoing improvement of analytical practices, reporting processes, and data management approaches.
