About The Position

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Junior Data Analyst within the Office of the Chief Financial Officer (OCFO). Reporting to the Business Assurance Manager, this foundation level role within the Business Assurance group provides reporting and data analytics support to the Procurement Department. Under general supervision, the Analyst will apply basic principles, theories, and concepts to bridge procurement business reporting needs and technology by collecting, cleaning, and analyzing financial data to produce actionable insights, financial reports, and dashboards. This position will use SQL, Excel, and data visualization tools to analyze data, detect trends and anomalies, and help the procurement organization in the decision support and strategic decision making by creating and or updating queries/reports/dashboards etc. The Junior Data Analyst will engage with the Business Systems Group in understanding the OCFO’s Business Systems and related data architecture, tables and reporting options. Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Science, or a related field, and a minimum of one year of professional experience in related fields.
  • 1 year of experience in a data-related role with a solid foundational background in quantitative fields.
  • Experience (through coursework or projects) using SQL to query databases and Excel for advanced data manipulation (VLOOKUPs, Pivot Tables).
  • Internships, capstone projects, or a verifiable portfolio that demonstrates the ability to handle real-world data.
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of SQL (joins, subqueries, and data cleaning).
  • Familiarity with programming languages for data analysis
  • Exposure to data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, or Google Looker Studio).
  • The ability to break down a complex problem into smaller, manageable parts and approach it with a logical, step-by-step methodology.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings to non-technical stakeholders clearly.
  • An obsessive eye for accuracy—ensuring that the "small numbers" add up before they reach the final report.
  • A "growth mindset" and a willingness to learn new tools and industries as the company’s data needs evolve.
  • Ability to interpret data, conduct analysis, and provide actionable insights.
  • Knowledge of methods to research, interpret, analyze, compile, and present data and information

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using and troubleshooting PeopleSoft financials and supply chain management applications release 9.0 or higher.
  • Experience using PeopleSoft Query and SQL, Cognos reporting tools
  • Experience working for a large, Federal direct- and grant-funded research organization.
  • Professional certification or advanced education in management information systems, PeopleSoft Financials and Supply Chain 9.0 higher, and Reporting/Data Analytics applications like Cognos 12, Power BI, Google Analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with analyzing financial datasets to identify trends, patterns, and discrepancies; developing, maintaining, and automating reports and dashboards and utilize tools to identify trends and support data-driven decision-making.
  • Support the department in transforming raw data into actionable insights. The primary focus is on data maintenance, basic reporting, and assisting senior analysts with moderate Division projects.
  • Assist in gathering data from database sources. Perform regular data "hygiene" to identify, troubleshoot, and correct errors or inconsistencies in datasets.
  • Develop and maintain automated reports and dashboards using LBNL supported tools to track key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Submit data reports to the Compliance team for DOE and UC reporting requirements.
  • Perform initial analysis to identify trends, correlations, and patterns in structured and unstructured data.
  • Maintain clear documentation of data definitions, analysis methodologies, and reporting processes to ensure data integrity across the organization.
  • Work alongside different departments to understand their data needs and provide basic analytical support for their specific queries.
