About The Position

The Judicial Tribunal is an impartial body of the Judicial Branch of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, established in accordance with the Judicial Branch Act, 2023. It consists of six members: one regular member from each of the five Territories, and a chairperson. Judicial Tribunal members must faithfully and impartially exercise their duties and functions under the Constitution and Otipemisiwak Métis Government Law. Members are appointed by the Citizens’ Council for a four-year term. The Tribunal is tasked with deciding and prescribing the resolution of disputes as set out in Otipemisiwak Métis Government legislation. Members receive honoraria-based remuneration, with travel and accommodations expenses covered for Tribunal-related business. The time commitment can vary widely depending on political and social circumstances.

Requirements

  • Must reside within the Lesser Slave Lake Territory, in one of the following Districts of the Métis Nation within Alberta: Lesser Slave Lake Métis District or Wabasca-Desmarais Métis District.
  • Be a Citizen of the Métis Nation within Alberta.
  • Be a minimum of 25 years old at the time of their appointment.
  • Not have been convicted of an indictable offence under the Criminal Code for which they have not received a pardon or record suspension that has not been revoked or ceased to have effect.
  • Demonstrate fair-mindedness and wisdom in decision-making.
  • Be ordinarily a resident in the Lesser Slave Lake Territory.
  • Not hold an elected position within the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
  • Ability to travel throughout Alberta, on occasion.
  • Access to reliable transportation.
  • A criminal record check must be completed for the successful applicant.

Responsibilities

  • Decide and prescribe the resolution of disputes regarding citizenship in the Métis Nation within Alberta.
  • Decide and prescribe the resolution of disputes regarding election of leadership of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
  • Decide and prescribe the resolution of disputes regarding the interpretation and application of the Constitution.
  • Decide and prescribe the resolution of disputes regarding the validity, application, and interpretation of Otipemisiwak Métis Government Law, regulations, or policies.
  • Decide and prescribe the resolution of disputes regarding actions, inactions, or decisions of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government or its Institutions.
  • Decide and prescribe the resolution of disputes regarding contraventions of the Constitution or Otipemisiwak Métis Government Law.
  • Faithfully and impartially exercise duties and functions under the Constitution and Otipemisiwak Métis Government Law.
  • Maintain a high level of confidentiality in all interactions.
