About The Position

This role is responsible for approving or denying mortgage loans in accordance with Credit Union lending standards. The position involves analyzing applications and performing comprehensive audits to ensure the accuracy of mortgage loan files. Key responsibilities include analyzing employment profiles, credit strength, property characteristics, and other relevant information to make loan recommendations, ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations, and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of loan products and underwriting guidelines. Additionally, the role involves mortgage servicing duties such as managing tax and insurance escrows, analyzing rate changes, and handling flood insurance. It also includes timely reporting and reconciliation of secondary market accounting, maintenance of the loan portfolio, and performing comprehensive loan audits before and after closing to ensure adherence to procedures and accuracy. The Jr Mortgage Underwriter/Servicer will also act as a backup member of the credit committee, underwriting loan applications and making independent lending determinations. Assistance may be provided to the VP of mortgage lending with special projects and reporting, and suggestions for business improvement are encouraged. The role also includes backing up the mortgage processor and closer, processing payoffs and discharges, and completing all required compliance training.

Requirements

  • One year (1) to three (3) years of similar or related experience.
  • A bachelor's degree, or achievement of formal certifications recognized in the industry as equivalent to a bachelor's degree (e.g., information technology certifications in lieu of a degree).
  • Working knowledge of the mortgage industry, specifically federal and state regulatory requirements.
  • Exceptional time management, attention to detail, strong member service skills and communication skills, are required.

  • Freddie Mac (FHLMC) and Fannie Mae (FNMA) knowledge is a bonus.

Responsibilities

  • Approve or deny mortgage loans, following Credit Union lending standards.
  • Analyze applications and perform comprehensive audits for accuracy of mortgage loan files.
  • Analyze employment profile, credit strength, property characteristics, and all other information pertinent to the credit decision process on each mortgage application.
  • Ensure Triangle Credit Union lending standards and policies are followed.
  • Ensure that the content and conduct of loan originations, processing, and servicing activities remain compliant and consistent with all state and federal regulations.
  • Maintain a current and professional knowledge of all loan products and their current terms, conditions, and all applicable underwriting guidelines.
  • Communicate any questions or concerns to the manager of the mortgage department.
  • Perform mortgage servicing duties including tax, insurance escrow, rate change analysis, and flood insurance.
  • Responsible for the timely reporting and reconciliation of all secondary market accounting (custodial accounts, general ledger accounts and monthly reconciliation).
  • Maintenance of loan portfolio.
  • Apply internal guidelines and ensure guidelines for the credit decision process.
  • Perform comprehensive loan audits on all loan applications in process prior to closing to ensure procedures are being followed and documentation is correct.
  • Perform the final closed loan audits for all mortgage loans that have closed to ensure completeness, accuracy, and compliance.
  • Underwrite loan applications and render independent lending determinations, recommendations, and decisions about the soundness of applications submitted to TCU and whether the credit union should approve or decline those mortgage applications.
  • Assist the VP of mortgage lending with various responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time including but not limited to working on special projects, reporting.
  • Proactively volunteer, make suggestions or recommendations that may improve business and/or the operations of the mortgage department.
  • Assist as a back up to Mortgage processor and Mortgage closer as needed.
  • Process payoffs and discharges.
  • Satisfactorily complete all required compliance training and comply with all regulations which apply within the scope of the position.
  • Performs other job related duties, as assigned.
