About The Position

The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting a Journeyperson Powerline Technician to fill a permanent full-time position. This position requires journeyperson-level skills in the construction, maintenance, and repair of overhead and underground electrical distribution and transmission lines.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Journeyperson Powerline Technician certificate with Red Seal
  • Class 3 Drivers License with Q Endorsement
  • Knowledge of approved methods, materials and tools used in high tension electric distribution and transmission line construction and maintenance work.
  • Some knowledge of the principles of electric theory as applied to electric distribution and transmission systems.
  • Knowledge of first aid including artificial respiration.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to climb poles and work with high tension wires, exercising proper safety precautions.
  • Skill in the use of line tools and testing equipment.
  • Good physical condition and health, sufficient physical strength and agility to perform heavy manual and climbing tasks under adverse weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled work in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electric distribution and transmission systems in accordance with standard trade practices.
  • Work on high‑voltage overhead and underground electrical systems, including operating on or adjacent to 4 kV and 22 kV lines, while ensuring the safety of employees and the public.
  • Set poles, string wire, and install or hang electrical equipment, including transformers, lightning arrestors, cut outs, cross arms, insulators, fused switches, braking switches, and power line conductors.
  • Carry out underground construction and maintenance, including pulling wires, setting transformers, and building substations.
  • Install, connect, and service electrical meters, streetlights, and traffic lights.
  • Operate and drive line trucks equipped with attachments such as winches, gin poles, hydraulic ladders, and pole hole augers.
  • Respond to after-hours trouble calls, including correcting power failures, resolving downed line issues, and performing emergency repairs.
  • Work under general supervision or independently on assigned troubleshooting tasks, with work subject to inspection during and after completion.
