About The Position

The Journeyperson Light Vehicle Mechanic will perform maintenance repair duties within the Mobile Maintenance department team. They will safely perform scheduled and unscheduled tasks to optimize equipment availability and contribute to the performance of the Maintenance Team. This role supports Tahltan Nation community engagement and reciprocity activities, where appropriate. The Journeyperson – Light Vehicle Mechanic is accountable for performing trade-specific work under supervision to develop Red Seal competencies. This includes diagnosing, servicing, maintaining, and repairing light vehicles and light duty support equipment, such as pickup trucks, crew buses, and utility vehicles. The role also involves performing preventive and scheduled maintenance, diagnosing and repairing various vehicle systems (engine, fuel, ignition, emission, exhaust, electrical, electronic, driveline, steering, suspension, braking, wheel end, climate control, comfort, and accessory systems), servicing and maintaining climate control and accessory systems, reading and interpreting technical information, using diagnostic tools, performing inspections and road tests, identifying warranty repairs, and accurately documenting work in SAP/CMMS. Additionally, the role requires maintaining safety, compliance, and site standards, including following safety critical procedures and environmental requirements for handling automotive fluids and hazardous materials. The position also contributes to workplace culture and community by supporting a respectful, inclusive workplace and Tahltan Nation community engagement.

Requirements

  • Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic Interprovincial Red Seal Certification
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license required
  • Minimum of 2-5 years’ related experience required
  • Ability to perform tasks that require strength and stamina in extreme weather conditions
  • Must be able to work with minimal supervision once familiar with requirements
  • A team player that works well with others
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work a two-week on / two-week off rotation (14 x 12hour days).
  • Ability to safely perform the physical demands of the role in shop and field environments, including lifting, bending, working in confined spaces, and performing outdoor field repairs in all weather conditions.
  • Basic computer proficiency for diagnostic scan tools, SAP/CMMS work order entry, and LMS training systems.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices and continuous learning.

Nice To Haves

  • Class 3 with air brakes endorsement preferred
  • Maintenance repair experience with various generators, pump systems and light plants preferred
  • Trades related experience and knowledge of Ford,Toyota and other various brands of light to medium duty vehicles
  • Team leader, lead hand and/or supervisory experience will increase candidate ranking
  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Candidates to provide information re: Safety Program related training & experience, Equipment specific training and skills plus other trades related tickets and certificates
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office and MS Outlook preferred, SAP experience a distinct asset
  • Willingness to attend technical training blocks at institutions away from the home site (approximately seven weeks per block).

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, service, maintain and repair light vehicles and light duty support equipment, including pickup trucks, crew buses and utility vehicles.
  • Perform preventive and scheduled maintenance, including fluid changes, brake service, tyre rotations and filter replacements.
  • Diagnose and repair engine, fuel, ignition, emission and exhaust systems.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical and electronic systems, including charging, starting, lighting, control modules and vehicle communication networks.
  • Diagnose and repair driveline, steering, suspension, braking and wheel end systems.
  • Service and maintain climate control, comfort and accessory systems.
  • Read and interpret technical service information, wiring diagrams and OEM repair procedures.
  • Use diagnostic scan tools, multimeters and precision measuring equipment to verify system operation.
  • Perform predelivery inspections, road readiness checks and road tests to verify repair quality.
  • Identify and document warranty eligible repairs in accordance with OEM guidelines.
  • Accurately document work completed in SAP/CMMS, including labour hours and parts used.
  • Comply with all Newmont safety standards, policies, procedures and legislative requirements.
  • Follow safety critical procedures, including confined space, permit-to-work and lockout/tagout, without exception.
  • Stop work where conditions present an immediate threat to health or safety.
  • Report hazards, near misses and incidents immediately.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, hazard assessments, JHAs and incident investigations.
  • Participate in Visible Felt Leadership (VFL) interactions and safety observations.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards in work areas and workshops.
  • Handle and dispose of automotive fluids, batteries and hazardous materials in accordance with environmental requirements.
  • Support a respectful, inclusive workplace consistent with Newmont values.
  • Support Tahltan Nation community engagement and reciprocity activities, where appropriate.
  • Mentor and train apprentices.
