About The Position

Under general supervision, performs the full range of skilled, journeyman level painter duties in the construction, finishing and repair of buildings, furniture and other wood or metal products in order to support the education mission of the District and to enhance the education environment.

Requirements

  • High school graduation, AND completion of trade (apprenticeship) and/or vocational school program including courses in mathematics, painting and carpentry skills.
  • Minimum of two (2) years work experience in the building trades as a journeyman level Painter or equivalent work experience in a commercial, educational or facilities operations setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the Painting trade, in addition to construction and building repair terminology, and applicable local, state and federal health and safety code requirements
  • Knowledge of skilled procedures, methods and practices of the painting trade.
  • Knowledge of the safety precautions used in the painting trade and Facility Maintenance.
  • Knowledge of different paints, solvents and their practical uses.
  • Ability to work on ladders and scaffolds.
  • Ability to match and mix paints.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and materials; must be able to work cooperatively with others, and be a self-starter and self-motivated to complete assigned job tasks.
  • Spatial ability is needed to understand forms and relationships
  • Knowledgeable in construction and building repair terminology.
  • Numerical ability required to make proper calculations.
  • Able to read and understand blueprints, specifications and diagrams.
  • Knowledge of trade related machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, maintenance and safe operating practices.
  • Strong organizational ability.
  • Knowledge of public schools or university operations preferred.
  • Knowledge of, and the ability and desire to support, relevant policies, procedures and strategies to promote effective educational operations for the protection of students, staff, co-workers and District property.
  • Maintains positive communication with maintenance shop personnel, trade foreman, shop administration, and school personnel to enhance cooperative action in order to meet the educational needs of students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with district administration and community; Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including the ability to listen and effectively respond to instruction.
  • Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
  • Ability to identify complex problems, review related information to develop, evaluate and recommend options and implement solutions.
  • Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents and/or ratios
  • Employee shall have a valid driver’s license at the time of his/her employment with the Kansas City Kansas USD #500 School District. IF, at any time during his/her employment, the employee should lose their driver’s license and/or their driver’s license be suspended for any reason, the employee shall immediately notify the Director of Physical Properties.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares walls, woodwork, ceilings, doors, furniture, and equipment for painting and refinishing
  • Removes old paint, stains, and varnish as required using paint removers, scrapers, wire brushes, or sand blaster
  • Selects proper paint for the finish surface by matching types and colors of paint.
  • Mixes paints using required portion of pigments, oils, and thinning and drying substances, and/or selects premixed paint to match specified color(s)
  • Paint surfaces using brushes, roller and/or spray equipment
  • Rigs stage or erects scaffolding
  • Spreads cloth(s) or plastic to protect floor and work environment
  • Cuts stencils and stencil surfaces as required
  • Replace windows and glass as needed, which may require accurate measuring and cutting of glass, or other materials.
  • Estimates, determines needs, and arranges for supplies and equipment in order to perform or schedule work assignments.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and/or specifications to determine procedure(s) for required construction and/or remodel projects.
  • Will assist other departments as needed to ensure all Paint & Glazing related work is performed according to safety standards.
  • Uses and performs operator maintenance on tools and equipment common to the trade such as, but not limited to spray guns, sanders, ladders, etc.
  • Keeps accurate record of time and materials used to successfully complete job tasks using written and/or computer generated formats.
  • May be required to perform other duties as required at a level of skill the same as or lower than required by his/her normal work assignment.
  • May perform minor supervisory role when designated a “Leader” on specific projects.
  • Must be able to perform work that involves the possible disturbance of asbestos containing materials (ACMs).
  • Must be medically and physically able to wear a respirator.
  • Other duties as directed.
