About The Position

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for a self-motivated professional to join our Region Three (Orem) Equipment Shop as a Journey Diesel Mechanic. In this role, you will ensure our fleet—including snowplows, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy and light duty equipment —operates safely and efficiently. You will primarily work in our shop, but you will also travel across the region to service heavy duty trucks and equipment in the field when it cannot be brought in for repairs.

Requirements

• At least four (4) years of professional mechanic experience. Relevant education may be substituted for experience year-for-year.
• A valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
• A State Inspection certificate or the ability to obtain one within 90 days of hire.
• Must provide your own full set of mechanic tools (a tool allowance is provided).
• Must be available 24/7 for overtime and varied schedules, especially during weather events.
• Must successfully pass a criminal history check.
• Must pass pre-employment and random drug tests.
• Current CDL Holders: Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse is required.

Responsibilities

• Perform oil changes, lubrication, and safety inspections.
• Use diagnostic tools to identify and fix mechanical issues, including overhauls and adjustments.
• Perform electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting and repairs.
• Perform welding, brazing, and cutting as needed for repairs.
• Road-test vehicles before and after service to ensure they meet safety standards.
• Order parts, manage inventory paperwork, and interpret repair manuals.
• Transport equipment and perform emergency repairs at various job sites.
• Participate in the Regional Snow Removal Plan, safely operating heavy equipment to plow snow and manage ice on the state highway system as needed.
