About The Position

As a journalist based in Quebec City, you will operate independently to research, gather, package and present material on our platforms. You must be a creative thinker who brings original ideas and treatments to your assignments. You must also show initiative, resourcefulness in the field and sound judgement. You will be assigned to newsgathering Thursdays through Mondays. You must be available to travel and work flexible hours. Work is governed by CBC/Radio-Canada programming policies and Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • Three (3) years’ experience in journalism or equivalent.
  • Broad general knowledge.
  • Excellent knowledge of current events.
  • Solid command of French (working language).
  • Strong proficiency in English.
  • Strong TV, radio and digital storytelling and interviewing skills.
  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.

Responsibilities

  • Write news copy and produce reports for newscasts, information programs and digital platforms in keeping with corporate standards and policies.
  • Keep up with current events through a variety of news sources.
  • Cultivate and maintain a network of local contacts.
  • Pitch and receive story assignments.
  • Research, gather, evaluate and vet all material for assigned stories.
  • Plan reports around the story being covered.
  • Conduct interviews and assess their relevance.
  • Field-produce television shoots.
  • Record audio for radio and digital platforms.
  • Take or oversee photography for digital platforms.
  • Review audio and visual elements to select the most impactful clips.
  • Provide context/data for accompanying graphics.
  • Develop story angles and write a variety of content (story copy, headlines, briefs, script/clips, intros, ticker headlines, etc.) tailored to specific platforms, updating them as news develops.
  • Adapt content across various news programs.
  • Translate or adapt copy or interviews into the broadcast language as assigned.
  • Script and narrate reports.
  • Submit copy for vetting.
  • Supervise editing as required.
  • Select, clip and assemble audio/video segments for television.
  • Perform basic audio editing for radio.
  • Edit and format audio and video elements for digital platforms.
  • Prepare live stand-ups.
  • Propose questions and clips, and suggest their order.
  • Deliver news updates or reports on air.
  • Publish copy, stories and audio/video elements directly to digital platforms.
  • Inform newsroom management of any event that warrants a news flash or special coverage.
  • Vet other journalists’ copy and contribute to collaborative reports as requested.
  • Provide written updates (notes, wire stories, etc.) to the Journalist/Presenter during special broadcasts.
  • Ensure the availability of the resources required to produce your reports (studio, booths, technician, etc.).
  • Drive a news vehicle.
  • For digital platforms, select and update hyperlinks relevant to the content; sort and save content for news sites; collaborate on organization of interactive events (moderate panels, chats, discussion forums, etc.) and take part in them; follow up on users’ emails.
  • Carry out all other related tasks as needed.
