About The Position

Novelis is a global leader in aluminum recycling and rolling, providing sustainable aluminum solutions. The Novelis Kennesaw Joining and Forming Team is seeking an Engineer to develop customer-focused technologies and sheet aluminum joining expertise, primarily for automotive applications. This role involves collaboration with various R&T teams to solve complex problems across different Novelis value streams and deepen core knowledge. The position requires strong project management and design skills related to sheet aluminum, with hands-on experience in various joining technologies. Opportunities include utilizing and proposing new testing equipment, managing projects, collaborating with external partners, traveling globally, and disseminating findings through publications and conferences.

Requirements

• B.S. in Mechanical, Materials/Metallurgical or Welding Engineering with 3-5 years’ work experience or M.S./Ph. D. degree with 1-2 years’ work experience
• Track record of developing joining technologies for implementation in automotive OEMs or other industries.
• Demonstrated management skills in planning, resourcing, and execution to deliver on-time results of large and complex projects
• First-hand experience presenting project highlights, outcomes, and setbacks to collaborators
• Capacity to evaluate customer needs and pivot when goals or requirements change
• Knowledge of aluminum alloy systems and how these systems are applied to various use scenarios, such as: auto applications or can body versus can end applications
• Demonstrated experience in sheet metal joining with practical experience with resistance spot welding, self-piercing riveting, laser welding and other mechanical joining.
• Knowledge of impact of material properties on joining process and joining performance.
• Knowledge of robotic programming
• Understanding of the business impact such as manufacturing/assembly cost by choice of certain joining technology and equipment.
• Knowledge of methods to measure and monitor Joining operations, such as vision systems, image analysis and load sensors, etc.
• Deliver on-time results in a fast-paced research and development environment.

Responsibilities

• Lead Science and Engineering advances in Joining to innovate new ideas in the application.
• Lead large internal and external customer-focused projects from concept to completion to enable increased customer use of aluminum. Ensure projects are well planned, appropriately resourced, correctly prioritized and timely delivered.
• Provide technical sharing and knowledge dissemination in Joining
• Take a key role in solving customer aluminum joining issues including mixed material joining and identifying their potential knowledge gaps
• Leverage data and techniques developed within Novelis to inform customer design constraints and experimental trial scenarios
• Provide technical competency in aluminum joining
• Write Technical reports and invention records in the course of research and support patent filing to strengthen Novelis IP position and protection.
• Adhere to and support company quality, environmental, health & safety, and certification standards, including ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, IATF 16949:2016, and ASI Certifications, where applicable.
