About The Position

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform a variety of duties in support of employment placement and vocational development of special education students to enhance school to career awareness and transition. Provide job coaching, training and information to special education students. Assist students with developing vocational, employability and job searching skills. Provide support and positive role modeling for special education students in work experience jobs.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school and two years experience working with individuals in a vocational, instructional or related environment including some experience with individuals with special needs.
  • Valid California driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of duties in support of employment placement and vocational development of special education students to enhance school to career awareness and transition; monitor, assess and adjust training and development activities in response to student progress and performance.
  • Provide training and information to assist special education students with obtaining and maintaining employment; train and assist students in the development of vocational, job searching, resume and interview skills; assist students in establishing and pursuing employment goals and objectives, and completing employment forms and applications.
  • Escort and train students in the proper use of public transportation to and from work and school sites; monitor safety of students in a variety of indoor and outdoor travel settings including educational, vocational and community based settings; teach students travel, self-advocacy, safe pedestrian skills and strategies to adapt to unfamiliar places and situations.
  • Monitor and assess student progress at work and at community based instruction sites; provide workability and transition services to students; assist students at job training sites and provide work instructions through verbal instructions, demonstration and actual job performance.
  • Provide support and positive role modeling for special education students in work experience jobs; implement positive behavior management techniques; encourage and assist students in developing appropriate job skills, social skills and independence.
  • Assess student needs and abilities and provide appropriate job training strategies; conduct follow up, job shadowing, and post-employment services with employers and students in accordance with established timelines and procedures.
  • Interview students and conduct assessments; administer appropriate tests according to established procedures and guidelines; determine if students are work-ready; refer students to potential employers and other opportunities according to needs, interests and abilities.
  • Assist student with completing various classroom assignments, homework and projects related to vocational development; monitor, oversee and assist students with drills and practices; explain and assure student understanding of classroom, job site and other assignments.
  • Maintain monthly calendars for community based instruction.
  • Utilize fading techniques to gradually withdraw support and modeling as students achieve quality and quantity standards; monitor student progress.
  • Assist students with developing self-help, toileting, feeding, personal hygiene, social and communication skills; lift, push or move students in and out of wheelchairs.
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of records and files including assessments, observations, progress and other related records; collect data for IEP's; perform clerical duties as assigned.
  • Operate a variety of office and work based equipment; demonstrate proper operation of equipment to students; operate a timer, a computer and assigned software; drive a vehicle to various sites to conduct work.
  • Communicate with other departments and outside agencies to coordinate activities, resolve issues or concerns or exchange information.
  • Coordinate field trips for career exploration, work site tours, meetings, presentations and other activities.
  • Order and maintain supplies as needed.
  • Assist in transition programs and activities as requested.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
