About The Position

This position is responsible for supporting the planning, directing, and implementation of a comprehensive safety program that ensures a safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment for all of Jones-Onslow EMC’s employees. The role involves inspecting work locations, assessing hazards, planning and coordinating training, ensuring compliance with regulations, and making recommendations for safety improvements. The specialist will also handle customer complaints related to plant damage and assist the Safety Manager in various safety initiatives.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • 4-5 Years of electric utility experience required.
  • Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License required.
  • Experience in planning, directing programs, and evaluating results.
  • Working knowledge of safety codes, standards and regulations as they affect the electric utility industry.
  • Knowledgeable of trends and developments in the industry as they relate to safety and line work.
  • Working knowledge of safe work practices and procedures in the electric utility industry.
  • Basic knowledge of instructional technique and program planning.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully both orally and in writing, with other employees and with the public.
  • Ability to perform outdoors, in adverse weather conditions for extended period.
  • Ability to think clearly, plan work, and must possess sound judgment abilities.
  • Ability to work for extended periods of time in confined areas.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to request clarification when needed.
  • Ability to lift objects of various sizes and shapes weighing in excess of 25 pounds.
  • Ability to utilize computers and other technology, to include common business software and other office equipment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree preferred.
  • Training in supervision or safety and program planning highly desirable.
  • Training in electric power transmission and distribution line construction and maintenance.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect work locations and assess them for safety hazards.
  • Plan and coordinate training and provide guidance to other employees in performing assigned responsibilities safely.
  • Assess Cooperative compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Make recommendations for changes needed to improve the safety of all departments.
  • Observe and enforce all safety rules and regulations adopted by the Cooperative.
  • Assist the Safety Manager in planning and implementing objectives.
  • Effectively resolve customer complaints and damage to plant issues to ensure mutually beneficial outcomes for members and the cooperative.
  • Provides necessary skills for the effective performance of the activities of the assigned position within policies and procedures.
  • Makes recommendations for changes needed to improve the quality of the safety program.
  • Coordinates and cooperates with other employees in performing assigned responsibilities.
  • Observes all safety and work rules as well as Regulations adopted by the Cooperative.
  • Assists the Safety Manager in planning and implementation of Cooperative safety and health objectives.
  • Prepares and submits purchase requisitions for materials and supplies.
  • Maintains assigned vehicle.
  • Maintains awareness of changes in regulatory requirements and determines appropriate actions for the cooperative to stay compliant.
  • Attends schools, conferences and training programs as required.
  • Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as requested.
  • Establishes systematic inspection of all work areas to determine whether conditions conform to state and federal regulations and has authority to stop the work in progress if unsafe conditions are found.
  • Provide analysis of inspections.
  • Establishes procedures for systematic inspection, either personally or through others, of all tools, vehicles and equipment to determine proper use and condition.
  • Assists Safety Manager during safety meetings and discussions.
  • Assists in the investigation of all accidents where there is either personal injury or significant property damage.
  • Evaluates and recommends corrective action.
  • Investigates, with the appropriate supervisor, any ‘near’ accident deemed necessary.
  • Assists with monitoring on-the-job training and development of all craft workers to ensure safe work practices and regulatory compliance.
  • Assists with the assessment of cooperative training needs, recommends, and develops appropriate training programs, which ensure compliance and safe work practices.
  • Assists with maintaining safety training records.
  • Public hazard recognition; safety presentations and other special projects as assigned.
  • Provides employees with an overall exposure to Safety Specifications so the employee can move to positions of increasing responsibility.
  • Trains and attends classes to maintain a thorough knowledge of REA specifications, company rules and regulations, and safety and code regulations.
