Joan Cirillo Emerging Journalist Fellow
About The Position
This one-year journalism fellowship is designed for early-career journalists from underrepresented or non-traditional backgrounds who are interested in exploring a career in public media. The fellowship provides hands-on experience through rotations across various OPB content teams, including news reporting, talk show production, digital production, and video program assistance. Fellows receive training in reporting, interviewing, audio/video editing, digital production, and storytelling, along with newsroom mentorship, career counseling, resume support, and professional development opportunities. The program aims to build journalism expertise in Oregon and prepare fellows for roles in public media.
Requirements
- Demonstrated interest in journalism through some prior experience.
- Eagerness for a career in public media.
- Ability to function in a deadline-driven environment.
- Commitment to high ethical standards in journalism.
- Enthusiasm for the mission of OPB and public media.
- Professional or personal experiences that will provide a unique perspective to the OPB newsroom and the field of journalism.
Nice To Haves
- Bilingual in English and another language, preferably one spoken in communities in the Pacific Northwest (e.g., Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, or Russian).
- Practical experience in journalism.
- An eye for diverse voices and sources in stories.
- Photography or video production skills.
- Experience using digital audio recording equipment and editing software.
Responsibilities
- Support various OPB Content teams on rotating programs, including reporting and editing for OPB news, producing daily talk shows or news magazines, serving as a digital producer, or assisting with the production of OPB TV programs.
- Participate in mentorship and development opportunities, including professional development, career counseling, resume and cover letter feedback, meetings with a mentor, conversations with other journalists and OPB employees, and joining OPB’s equity team.
- Collaborate with OPB staff to improve the fellowship program by assisting with promotion, planning, and recruitment.
