About The Position

The Janitorial Lead performs and oversees the daily cleaning and maintenance of assigned buildings and grounds to keep them clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming. In addition to completing hands-on cleaning work, the Lead guides and assists members of the custodial team, checks the quality of completed work, and serves as the first point of contact for day-to-day custodial questions and issues.

Requirements

  • Two (2) or more years of custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or building maintenance experience.
  • Experience operating commercial cleaning equipment such as floor scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, carpet extractors, and industrial vacuums.
  • Working knowledge of cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and proper dilution and safety practices.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written and verbal instructions, product labels, and safety information.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to give clear direction to others.
  • Ability to manage time well, prioritize tasks, and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to high standards of cleanliness.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to work a flexible schedule, including [evenings, weekends, and holidays] as needed.
  • Ability to pass a background check and, if applicable, a drug screen.
  • Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds regularly, such as trash bags, supply cases, and equipment, and up to 75 pounds occasionally with assistance.
  • Stand, walk, and remain on feet for most of an entire shift, often on hard surfaces.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, twist, squat, and reach overhead or below the waist.
  • Climb stairs and ladders or step stools to reach high areas.
  • Push and pull heavy equipment such as mop buckets, floor machines, and trash carts over long distances and on different types of surfaces.
  • Use hands and fingers to grasp, handle, and operate tools and equipment, with repetitive motions of the hands, wrists, and arms.
  • Have adequate vision, hearing, and sense of smell to identify hazards, spills, and unsafe conditions.
  • Be able to communicate with coworkers and supervisors and respond to alarms and emergency signals.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience leading, training, or coordinating a small team is preferred.
  • Experience in a winery, office, hospitality, or industrial setting is a plus.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required or preferred.
  • Certification in custodial technology, such as a Cleaning Management Institute (CMI) or ISSA credential, is a plus but not required.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, if required for the position.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assign daily tasks and work areas to custodial team members and adjust assignments to cover absences or changing needs.
  • Train new team members on cleaning procedures, equipment operation, chemical safety, and company standards.
  • Inspect completed work for quality and consistency and follow up with team members to correct any issues.
  • Monitor and order cleaning supplies and equipment and keep inventory records current.
  • Communicate schedules, concerns, and staffing needs to the supervisor, and report attendance issues.
  • Model a positive, professional attitude and help maintain good working relationships among team members and building occupants.

  • Sweep, mop, scrub, vacuum, buff, and polish floors of all types, including tile, concrete, carpet, and hardwood.
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms, including toilets, urinals, sinks, mirrors, counters, and partitions, restock soap, paper products, and other supplies.
  • Dust, wipe, and sanitize desks, furniture, door handles, light switches, and other high-touch surfaces.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers, and transport waste to designated collection areas.
  • Clean windows, glass doors, walls, baseboards, vents, and light fixtures as scheduled.
  • Perform periodic deep-cleaning tasks such as carpet extraction, stripping and waxing floors, and pressure washing.
  • Set up and break down rooms for meetings and events and respond promptly to spills and other cleaning emergencies.
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs and reporting larger repair needs to management.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and chemical labeling and storage requirements.
  • Use "wet floor" signs and other safety measures to prevent slips, trips, and falls.
  • Inspect, clean, and safely operate cleaning equipment, and report any damage or malfunction.
  • Follow proper procedures for handling and disposing of hazardous or biohazardous materials.
  • Secure buildings, turn off lights, and lock doors and windows as directed at the end of the shift.
  • Report safety hazards, incidents, injuries, and security concerns immediately.
