About The Position

The Janitor is responsible for maintaining Southview Heights and Terrace, including its buildings and surrounding grounds, ensuring a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for residents, families, and staff. This role involves regular checks, emergency response, and general cleaning duties to uphold the standards of the facility.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • WHMIS certificate
  • Current negative TB test
  • Able to pass a Criminal Record Check
  • Five years of experience in a janitorial or similar position
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Strong organizational skills and able to be bonded
  • Must be fluent in reading and writing in English
  • Ability to lift at least 35 kg
  • Ability to read and implement work routines
  • A heart and disposition for working with seniors
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular round checks of the entire building to ensure all doors and windows are properly secured.
  • Notify Operations and Business Manager of plumbing, electrical, and heating emergencies and arrange for emergency repairs.
  • Provide emergency response to residents of Southview Terrace and assist Heights as required.
  • Ensure the evacuation of residents in case of fire/earthquake according to procedure.
  • Receive phone calls to Southview when required.
  • Read and sign the communication book daily.
  • Sweep/mop floors, moving items such as carts and floor mats as per schedule.
  • Perform garbage and recycling removal as per schedule.
  • Clean and sanitize common area washrooms, offices, and other areas as per schedule.
  • Clean heavy black chairs in the recreation room as per schedule.
  • Clean commercial kitchen ovens, stove tops, grills, and walls as per schedule.
  • Clean and refill the tea room coffee machine when needed.
  • Shovel and salt entrance ways when required.
  • Accommodate requested duty assignments from the Support Services Supervisor regarding unexpected work-related situations.
  • Write in the maintenance book requesting repair services.
  • Inform the Support Services Supervisor when supplies are getting low.
  • Follow schedules and rotations of cleaning where applicable.
  • Keep outside grounds, gazebo, stairwells, and drains clear of leaves and garbage.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
