About The Position

AtkinsRéalis is seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineering Intern to join our Edison, New Jersey office. This role involves assisting with the preparation of engineering plans, drawings, and supporting documentation for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) design and traffic engineering projects. The intern will support engineering investigations, data collection, and planning activities under the guidance of experienced team members. Responsibilities include assisting in the preparation of technical memoranda, data summaries, and sections of engineering reports, observing and supporting construction engineering activities, researching design alternatives and regulatory requirements, assisting with preliminary cost estimates, and participating in quality control checks and field visits.

Requirements

  • Must have completed 90 hours towards a civil engineering degree from an ABET accredited program by the start of the internship (Summer 2027).
  • Basic computer skills required to enter data into spreadsheets or databases.
  • Math skills to perform simple calculations; willingness to learn.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AutoCAD, OpenRoads Designer, or MicroStation

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation of engineering plans, drawings, and supporting documentation related to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) design and traffic engineering projects.
  • Support engineering investigations, data collection efforts, and planning activities for projects with clearly defined objectives under the guidance of experienced team members.
  • Assist in preparing technical memoranda, data summaries, and sections of engineering reports while developing technical writing skills through mentorship and review.
  • Observe and support construction engineering activities, including reviewing project documentation, tracking construction progress, and learning quality assurance and quality control processes under the supervision of experienced engineers.
  • Research and compile information related to design alternatives, site conditions, applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with the preliminary estimates for labor, materials, and project costs.
  • Participate in quality control activities by checking calculations, verifying data, and drawings with guidance from senior staff.
  • Participate in field visits and site observations to gain practical experience with transportation infrastructure design and construction activities.
