About The Position

We are seeking an ITS/Traffic Engineer to join our team in Raleigh, NC and help deliver technology-driven transportation solutions that improve safety, mobility, and operations for communities and agencies. Your role will involve helping to deliver smarter, safer, and more reliable transportation systems through ITS and traffic engineering solutions. This includes working with traffic signals, fiber optic communications, IP cameras, dynamic message signs, detection systems, adaptive signal control, emergency vehicle preemption, transit signal priority, edge-computing technology, and connected, autonomous, and electric vehicle applications. You will apply emerging technologies, sound engineering judgment, and creative problem-solving to address complex transportation challenges. Collaboration with colleagues, clients, and multidisciplinary project teams is key to delivering successful transportation projects with meaningful community impact. You will support Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSM&O) projects that apply technology, data, and infrastructure solutions to improve safety, mobility, reliability, and overall roadway operations. Responsibilities include developing plans, layouts, drawings, and technical deliverables for ITS, traffic signal, signing and pavement marking, communications, traffic operations, and safety improvement projects. You will also conduct traffic engineering studies and investigations, evaluate design alternatives, and prepare technical documentation. Support for project delivery through plan reviews, shop drawing reviews, and construction requests for information is also expected.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering is required.
  • Engineer Intern (E.I.) or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is required.
  • 2 to 5 years of relevant engineering experience, depending on education level and project experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with ITS, traffic signals, transportation technology, traffic operations, or roadway safety projects is preferred.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with engineering software and design tools is preferred; experience with CAD, MicroStation, and Visio is a plus.

  • Develop plans, layouts, drawings, and technical deliverables for ITS, traffic signal, signing and pavement marking, communications, traffic operations, and safety improvement projects.
  • Conduct traffic engineering studies and engineering investigations, including intersection and corridor analyses, sight distance reviews, road safety audits, crash analyses, traffic modeling, intersection control evaluations, benefit-cost analyses, safety countermeasure assessments, planning analyses, field reviews, and design tasks.
  • Evaluate design alternatives, site conditions, regulatory requirements, and agency criteria to help develop practical, effective, and constructible project solutions.
  • Prepare technical documentation, specifications, system requirements, permit applications, reports, cost estimates, material quantity estimates, and labor-hour estimates for transportation technology projects.
  • Support project delivery through plan reviews, shop drawing reviews, construction requests for information, progress documentation, field observations, system integration activities, quality reviews, computation checks, and design and drawing reviews.
