About The Position

The Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Technology Engineer has a passion and aptitude for new and emerging technologies and for incorporating them within MCDOT. In this role in the Traffic Technology Branch, you will be responsible for the development, testing, and implementation of various ITS and Connected Vehicle (CV) technologies, including communication, detection, and signal control systems. You will also be responsible for managing associated projects and providing support for the MCDOT SmartDriveSM Program, the Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) Lab, and the continued development and expansion of these efforts with our regional partners. In this role, you will also serve as the MCDOT SmartDriveSM program manager, coordinating day-to-day operations, reporting, enrollment, and maintenance. Additional research into new fields (Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cooperative Perception, etc.) may be assigned based on Branch initiatives and Department needs.

Requirements

  • Two years of professional pre-registration engineering experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Systems, Industrial Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Certification as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) may substitute for the experience requirement
  • A combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis
  • Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona driver's license by the time of hire.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with directly managing and programming ITS devices through various applications, command-line interfaces, and protocols
  • Experience with ITS implementation, specifically involving field equipment deployment, operations, and maintenance, and their use by the Traffic Management Center staff
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary teams and coordinating with multiple stakeholders on local and regional implementation projects
  • Experience in project administration and delivery of Federally funded grants related to ITS and TSMO strategies, ensuring compliance with all Federal requirements
  • Ability to research new and emerging technologies and develop testing, evaluation, and implementation plans and processes
  • Ability to be self-motivated, taking on a significant level of responsibility while managing multiple complex projects at once
  • Strong technical writing skills in support of grant development opportunities and proposal submission
  • Ability to present complex technical information to a variety of audiences clearly and effectively

Responsibilities

  • Manage the MCDOT SmartDriveSM Program, and projects focused on Connected Vehicle and Vehicle-to-Everything
  • Research, test, model, and analyze the performance of new and emerging technologies through the TSMO Lab and seek opportunities to partner with vendors and local agency partners through AZTech and other organizations
  • Identify and design projects focused on improving ITS infrastructure using new and emerging technology in the Transportation Systems Management and Operations space
  • Coordinate with other Division Branches and Department Divisions on new and emerging technology deployments and implementation opportunities
  • Participate in national technical committees focused on developing standards and driving innovation in the Transportation Systems Management and Operations and ITS space
  • Develop project proposals and pursue Federal grant funding opportunities in the Transportation Systems Management and Operations and ITS space
  • Oversee and review the work of staff, contractors, or industry specialists/consultants as needed; Leads the quality control process in the design and review phases of relevant projects, including reviewing engineering reports, project plans, cost estimates, and special provisions for projects
  • Other duties as assigned
