About The Position

HII Mission Technologies is seeking a Systems Engineering Intern to join our Integrated Training Systems – Systems Engineering (ITS SE) team in Virginia Beach. This internship is an opportunity to support real-world engineering, integration, and test efforts for U.S. Navy training systems while gaining hands on experience with Model Based Systems Engineering within complex system architectures. This is a 10‑week, full‑time internship running from June 1 through August 7, working 40 hours per week with an hourly pay range of $24–$28. This internship is designed to prepare rising sophomores and juniors for entry into the engineering workforce through meaningful, discipline related project work. Interns support engineering teams working on integrated Navy training systems, system architectures, requirements analysis, test planning, and technical documentation aligned with ITS SE project needs. This role and contract is part of Mission Technologies’ Global Security protfolio, which supports LVC (Live, Virtual, Constructive) training environments, fleet readiness, advanced simulation, and maritime systems modernization for the U.S. Navy and DoD. As an intern, you’ll contribute directly to engineering tasks that support the Navy’s mission preparation and advanced training systems.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent + Must be working towards a Bachelor's degree with between 40% and 60% of the required credits completed. Candidates with higher credit completion twoard a bachelors degree or graduate degree will still be considered.
  • 3.0 minimum GPA required to participate.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance.
  • Familiarity with systems engineering or technical disciplines, such as engineering fundamentals, programming basics (e.g., C/C++, Java), modeling/simulation concepts, or system architecture.
  • Understanding of or willingness to learn Model Based System Engineering processes.
  • Strong writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Critical thinking, problem solving capability, and strong attention to detail.
  • Motivated self starter with a desire to learn and gain practical engineering experience.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD interim secret security clearance to start.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with Model Based Systems Engineering and SysML.
  • Current DoD clearance preferred, curret secret of above desired.
  • Preference for engineering or technical majors (Systems, Electrical, Computer, Mechanical, Software, or related).
  • Interest in modeling & simulation, Navy training systems, or complex system-of-systems environments.

Responsibilities

  • Assist systems engineers with requirements analysis, documentation, modeling, configuration updates, and system integration support.
  • Contribute to engineering research tasks, technical investigations, or data organization for active projects.
  • Help prepare engineering diagrams, meeting materials, and model based documentation for project reviews.
  • Provide administrative and technical support for project team activities, stand ups, and coordination meetings.
  • Support project-based assignments, including maintaining technical records, logs, or engineering artifacts.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned within the ITS SE engineering team.
