About The Position

The Department of Family & Community Services is recruiting for IT System Administrator 2 in Anchorage/Juneau. This position is open to Alaska Residents only. The mission of the Department of Family and Community Services (DFCS) is "To provide support, safety, and personal well-being for vulnerable Alaskans.” The Network Services (NS) of DFCS works as a team with the Customer Service section of IT, Business Applications (BA), Project Management Office (PMO), and the Department Security Office (DSO) to keep the department technologically operational and secure.

Requirements

  • Competency Based Minimum Qualifications: Hardware: Knowledge of specifications, uses, and types of computer or computer-related equipment.
  • Infrastructure Design: Knowledge of the architecture and typology of software, hardware, and networks, including LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems, their components and associated protocols and standards, and how they operate and integrate with one another and with associated controlling software.
  • Operating Systems: Knowledge of computer network, desktop, and mainframe operating systems and their applications.
  • Systems Integration: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for installing, integrating, and optimizing information systems components.
  • Systems Testing and Evaluation: Knowledge of principles, methods, and tools for analyzing and developing systems testing and evaluation procedures and technical characteristics of IT systems, including identifying critical operational issues.
  • Equivalent to those typically gained by: Training in computer science, information technology, system administration, or a similar field and professional experience in database, network, or system administration.
  • Customer Service: Works with clients and customers to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  • Technical Expertise: Effectively applies technical knowledge to solve a range of problems; develops technical solutions to new or highly complex problems that cannot be solved using existing methods or approaches; is sought out as an expert to provide advice or solutions in the technical area.
  • Technical Problem Solving: Troubleshoots, diagnoses, analyzes, and identifies system malfunctions to determine the source and cause of the problem.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and mentor Site Support staff (Systems Administrators I), providing technical guidance, workload coordination, and performance support to ensure consistent, high-quality service delivery.
  • Oversee site-level server, Active Directory, GPO, networking, and workstation support activities, ensuring adherence to standards and validating the quality of work performed by the team.
  • Plan, assign, and manage site support projects—including server upgrades, GPO deployments, network improvements, and operational initiatives—while monitoring progress and removing obstacles.
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting for escalated issues across file/print services, Active Directory, GPOs, WAN/Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks, and entry-level datacenter components, guiding staff through resolution.
  • Coordinate with management and cross-functional teams to improve processes, develop documentation, and ensure alignment between site operations, datacenter standards, and organizational goals.
