IT & Security Manager

FAR.AI,

About The Position

FAR.AI is seeking an IT & Security Manager to ensure the reliable and secure operation of its internal systems as the organization grows. This is a hands-on role for an individual with a security-minded engineering approach to internal systems, focusing on robust systems under pressure. The role reports to the COO and collaborates with the Head of Research Acceleration. The IT & Security Manager will be responsible for organizational IT aspects including accounts, devices, identity and access management, and the FAR.Labs office network. In the near future, this role will involve hiring and managing an IT Coordinator. This is the first dedicated IT hire, offering the opportunity to shape the team's future.

Requirements

  • Experience owning IT and security at a technical organization of 30-150 people, ideally as the first or sole IT person.
  • Comfort in a terminal and ability to code; preference for automation over manual processes.
  • Focus on user experience and addressing root causes rather than managing symptoms.
  • Hands-on security experience driven by threat models, with a clear understanding of defended against threats and resource allocation decisions.
  • Experience implementing and owning core identity and device infrastructure, including MDM and SSO.
  • Fast and service-oriented approach to support, viewing the support queue as system information.
  • Clear communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Regular use of LLMs in personal work with informed opinions on their application.

Nice To Haves

  • Interest in AI safety or security, with an understanding of the field's importance and the ability to assess associated risks.
  • Experience hiring, managing, or mentoring a junior teammate.
  • Engaging with security as a craft outside of work (e.g., personal compute builds, home labs, CTFs, side projects, security conferences).
  • Experience obtaining SOC 2 Type 2 and complying with GDPR.
  • Experience in fast-paced environments such as startups, nimble nonprofits, or high-growth teams.
  • Experience in a research organization, deep-tech startup, or similar technical environment.

Responsibilities

  • Own core internal systems end-to-end: accounts, devices, identity and access management, onboarding and offboarding, the FAR.Labs office network, and daily support.
  • Remediate known security gaps, prioritizing by risk, including access controls, endpoint hardening, data protection, data governance, and vendor and application risk.
  • Design and implement self-serve systems and processes to reduce manual work and operational overhead.
  • Partner with teams across Research, Operations, Futures, and Communications to understand their workflows and help them build securely within their domains.
  • Hire and manage an IT Coordinator, defining the role and developing the team as the organization grows.
  • Communicate changes clearly, establish feedback loops, and manage internal change processes to ensure smooth adoption of new systems and policies.

Benefits

  • Health Insurance - 94% of premium paid by Organization
  • 401(k) plan with up to 2% match
  • 25 days Paid Time Off per year
  • Up to 10 days of paid sick leave per year
