About The Position

The IT Network Engineer is a mid-level position in the University of Maryland’s Division of Information Technology (DIT), based in College Park, Maryland, and reports to the Assistant Director, Network Engineering. The role collaborates with others to plan, design, implement, develop, and support wired and wireless network infrastructure and improvements. Work can span the full lifecycle of copper and fiber infrastructure, routers and switches, traffic shapers, VPN systems, firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, load balancers, VoIP, wireless infrastructure, and monitoring and alerting systems. The engineer keeps network documentation current, including design documents, purpose statements, stakeholder requirements, test and support plans, as-built diagrams and specifications, and runbooks. The role also presents technical designs and training topics to medium-sized audiences with varied technical backgrounds, mentors DIT colleagues as needed, participates in an on-call rotation, and provides some support outside business hours.
