IT Manager, Infrastructure

TerraPower•Bellevue, WA
•Onsite

About The Position

TerraPower is seeking an IT Manager to lead a team responsible for maintaining and operating our infrastructure environment - compute, network, storage, identity, and backup/DR - across a mixed estate of government and public clouds, a private data center, and site-local compute. This hands-on leadership role bridges technology and business, ensuring infrastructure reliably supports engineering, operations, and corporate functions, while our international small office footprint continues to grow. The IT Manager will oversee a team of systems engineers, network engineers, and HPC engineers. Systems engineers focus on server, storage, AI, and virtualization platforms which includes build, configuration, automation, and troubleshooting. Network engineers own routing, segmentation, WAN/SD-WAN, and secure access across sites and clouds. HPC engineers support accelerated compute platform infrastructure, and HPC scheduling for engineering and research workloads.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 3–8 years of experience managing technology resources including FTEs and contractors, with direct accountability for their work and development.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting enterprise infrastructure: cloud environments (Azure, AWS, or GCP), enterprise networking, and data center/virtualization platforms.
  • Working knowledge of identity architecture (Entra ID or equivalent), backup/DR concepts, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Ansible), and scripting (, PowerShell, Bash or Python).
  • Solid grasp of infrastructure support fundamentals: incident and change management, environment strategy, and monitoring.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a regulated or engineering-driven industry (nuclear, aerospace, energy, defense, life sciences, etc.).
  • Familiarity with ITIL-aligned service management practices and tooling.
  • Experience with US Government cloud environments (Azure Government, GCC High, AWS GovCloud) and CMMC or NIST 800-171 programs.
  • Experience supporting international office standups, including cross-border data handling.
  • Familiarity with GPU/accelerated compute, HPC scheduling, or AI platform infrastructure.
  • Exposure to laboratory or OT/ICS environments and their segmentation requirements.
  • Relevant certifications (cloud, CCNP/CCIE, CISSP) are useful but secondary to demonstrated leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the team: Manage, coach, and develop a team of systems engineers, network engineers, and HPC engineers. Set clear expectations, give useful feedback often, and remove obstacles. Own hiring, onboarding, performance management, and career development for your team. Balance workload across cloud initiatives, data center operations, international site standups, and production support demands. Create the conditions for people to do good work: clear ownership, reasonable on-call rotations, documented runbooks, and enough slack to think.
  • Own the infrastructure portfolio: Serve as the operational owner for compute, network, telecom, storage, virtualization, identity, and backup/DR across multi-cloud, private data center, and site-local environments. Maintain and enforce infrastructure standards, patterns, and guardrails so application, data, and AI platform teams can build without bespoke review each time. Own the operational boundary between commercial and US Government cloud tenants, including controlled-data segregation and compliance-aligned configuration (NIST SP 800-171, CMMC, FedRAMP-relevant services). Direct capacity planning and lifecycle management for HPC infrastructure supporting AI and engineering workloads. Partner with Architecture, Applications, Information Security, and Data Management peers on identity, backup/recovery, monitoring, and data integration.
  • Deliver projects: Lead infrastructure implementations — cloud landing zones, data center refreshes, HPC platform rollouts, and international office standups (network, identity, endpoint, and collaboration footprint) from design through deployment and stabilization. Manage infrastructure vendors and integrators (cloud providers, network/SD-WAN, data center and compute hardware, HPC/GPU platform vendors): hold them to scope and schedule, escalate effectively, and know the contract(s). Establish a repeatable site-deployment pattern so each new international location is faster and more consistent than the last.
  • Support the business: Build real working relationships with engineering, lab, and corporate stakeholders. Understand workload needs — including accelerated AI/HPC compute and test-stand or OT-adjacent environments — well enough to translate them into infrastructure decisions. Establish sensible service levels, intake processes, and prioritization mechanisms that reduce friction. Bring cost discipline to infrastructure decisions: cloud unit economics, right-sizing, license posture, and honest build-versus-buy analysis.
  • Operate in a regulated environment: Ensure infrastructure changes follow established change management, documentation, and quality requirements. Partner with Legal, Trade Compliance, and Information Security on export control (10 CFR Part 810, EAR/ITAR), data residency (UK GDPR, Korea's PIPA), records management, and audit readiness.
